Sheet mulching our former compost bin site will help ensure our plants are off to a great start. What are some benefits of sheet mulching? Weed suppression Saves water by retaining moisture Builds soil as the cardboard and mulch break down Encourages beneficial insects to move in Saves cardboard from going to the landfill Multiple layers make the best barrier against stubborn weeds. Step 1: Source cardboard Pro tip wait until the beginning of the month when new neighbors are moving in and rescuse free piles of cardboard from the landfill Step 2: Soak cardboard in water. Use a plastic garbage can or storage tub. This makes step 3 & 4 much easier. Step 3: Remove any tape, stickers, staples, or other non-biodegradable parts Step 4: Tear wet cardboard into hand sized pieces. It's ok to do larger if you're covering a lot of space. Step 5: Now you're ready to sheet mulch. Layer and overlap the cardboard around your plants. Pile on wood mulch, covering the cardboard completely. Repeat as desired. Water in your plants at their base. Enjoy.
