On March 6th, 2024, Professor Alana Gunn, PhD, presented at IPCE's Civic Engagement Lunch Talk series held on campus in Daley Hall. Her presentation was titled "Utilizing Social Advocacy Research to Explore the Effects of Policing on Community Health”. In this clip, Professor Gunn discusses the effectiveness of using Photovoice. Professor Gunn’s research asks, "How do communities experience policing efforts, and in what ways does it shape their health?" and "How can participatory research methods be utilized to engage community and build advocacy?" Gunn and her Co-PI's, Sage Kim, PhD; Linda Weatherspoon (Roll Call), recruited community participants and partnered with a CAB to determine themes from the community, such as social disorganization, disengagement, and trauma. These findings were disseminated through a Photovoice Exhibition in fall of 2023, which led to multiple community forums and radio appearances. Check out this clip from Professor P. Zitlali Morales and her team’s Civic Engagement Lunch Talk presentation "Amplifying Latinx Families’ Language Education Rights: Luchando for Urban Dual Language Bilingual Education"! During the 2022-2023 academic year, Dr. Morales, an awardee of IPCE’s Civic Engagement Research Awards, conducted workshops with Latinx, predominantly Spanish-speaking parents around the Chicagoland area. Dr. Morales and her team’s culminating activity was a Dual Language Bilingual Education Parent Summit hosted at UIC. During the summit, the team shared resources with parents (such as bilingual book vendors and a talk regarding bilingual speech-language services) and invited them to participate in a focus group conversation. As a group, parents shared their experiences and hopes with respect to language services in school and beyond. Definitions of civic engagement in academic literature and online vary greatly. However, it is our intent at IPCE to avoid a narrow debate about meanings and interpretations of civic engagement. We believe it is important that our definition be broad enough to encompass a wide range of activities, but also be specific enough to guide our activities. See the three features that guide our definition of civic engagement, and find us at ipce.uic.edu to learn more about the work we do!

Reflecting on an incredible evening at the Civic Days event hosted at the Chicago History Museum over the weekend. From thought-provoking conversations to immersing ourselves in the city’s captivating history, this event was a reminder of the importance of active participation in shaping our community. The Chicago History Museum is changing how we celebrate together. Instead of one event on Independence Day, CHM and Made By Us are hosting Civic Season. It started on Juneteenth and includes Civic Days, all leading to an Independence Day celebration. The Museum will be a place for Chicagoans to connect, learn new skills, and get involved in the community for a brighter future as informed citizens. #Civicseason #chicagohistorymusuem

On April 17th, 2024, Professor Rebecca Woodard, PhD, from the UIC College of Education, presented at IPCE's last Civic Engagement Lunch Talk of the semester held on campus in Daley Hall. Her presentation was titled "Lessons from the Ed Write Collab on the Importance of Critical Love in Civically-Engaged Communities”. She was accompanied by her research partners, Andrea Vaughan, PhD, Visiting Research Associate Professor from the College of Education and Doctoral Candidate Kristine Wilber. During their talk, Dr. Woodard and her team shared preliminary findings about how teachers in their collective understood the power of participating in a teacher collaborative focused on writing for civic engagement. They shared three findings: (1) Teachers’ voices offer personal experiences and critical analyses of education systems; (2) Gathering in writing communities empowers teachers to raise our voices on collective concerns; and (3) By gathering, teachers can create critically-loving communities.
