The Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement (IPCE) at the University of Illinois at Chicago is committed to transforming democracy by creating a more fully engaged community with more effective leaders. It achieves this by creating opportunities for scholars, concerned citizens, students, community leaders, elected officials, and the public to actively participate in social discourse, policy issues and social trends.
UIC Flames! Interested in becoming more civically active as we near the beginning of fall semester? Check out these events hosted by our friends at Student Leadership and Civic Engagement (SLCE)! RSVP to get more involved within UIC and the greater Chicago community.
The Service Expo is an opportunity for the UIC community to explore avenues to serve Chicago. Community agencies and organizations come to campus to recruit volunteers and interns and share their missions. A wide variety of agencies are represented, focused on youth, the environment, the arts, animals, human rights, community development, health, and more. Students, faculty, and staff can find service and volunteer opportunities that match their interests, learn about the needs of Chicago-area communities, and find ways to get involved. The Service Expo will be held in conjunction with the UIC Involvement Fair IN PERSON on Wednesday (9/4) and Thursday (9/5). RSVP here: https://uic.campusgroups.com/slce/rsvp_boot?id=2258547
Save the date! Flames Day of Service will be held on Friday, September 6, 2024. The Flames Service Day (previously the Welcome Service Project) is an annual event for the UIC community, specifically helping connect incoming first year and transfer students to current students and staff as well as serving the surrounding UIC community. Occurring on the Friday of the first week of the fall semester, the project gives students an opportunity to provide service as a group, meet new people and form friendships, build a UIC community, and kick off their journey to becoming an active citizen. On March 6th, 2024, Professor Alana Gunn, PhD, presented at IPCE's Civic Engagement Lunch Talk series held on campus in Daley Hall. Her presentation was titled "Utilizing Social Advocacy Research to Explore the Effects of Policing on Community Health”. In this clip, Professor Gunn discusses the effectiveness of using Photovoice.
Professor Gunn’s research asks, "How do communities experience policing efforts, and in what ways does it shape their health?" and "How can participatory research methods be utilized to engage community and build advocacy?" Gunn and her Co-PI's, Sage Kim, PhD; Linda Weatherspoon (Roll Call), recruited community participants and partnered with a CAB to determine themes from the community, such as social disorganization, disengagement, and trauma. These findings were disseminated through a Photovoice Exhibition in fall of 2023, which led to multiple community forums and radio appearances.

Check out this clip from Professor P. Zitlali Morales and her team’s Civic Engagement Lunch Talk presentation "Amplifying Latinx Families’ Language Education Rights: Luchando for Urban Dual Language Bilingual Education"!
During the 2022-2023 academic year, Dr. Morales, an awardee of IPCE’s Civic Engagement Research Awards, conducted workshops with Latinx, predominantly Spanish-speaking parents around the Chicagoland area. Dr. Morales and her team’s culminating activity was a Dual Language Bilingual Education Parent Summit hosted at UIC. During the summit, the team shared resources with parents (such as bilingual book vendors and a talk regarding bilingual speech-language services) and invited them to participate in a focus group conversation. As a group, parents shared their experiences and hopes with respect to language services in school and beyond.

Happy Independance day from your friends at IPCE!
Today, we’re celebrating not only fireworks and barbecues but also the spirit of unity and independence that binds us together as a nation. Have a safe and joyous Independence Day!
Definitions of civic engagement in academic literature and online vary greatly. However, it is our intent at IPCE to avoid a narrow debate about meanings and interpretations of civic engagement. We believe it is important that our definition be broad enough to encompass a wide range of activities, but also be specific enough to guide our activities.
See the three features that guide our definition of civic engagement, and find us at ipce.uic.edu to learn more about the work we do!
