Did you know that April was financial literacy month? For the past two years, Amalgamated Bank of Chicago has partnered with Junior Achievement (JA) to share financial knowledge with school children in Cook and DuPage Counties. This year, ABOC volunteers have already taught financial literacy to over 200 students! Amalgamated Bank of Chicago sponsored CRA partner DuPage Pads’ Rock & Bowl fundraising event to end homelessness on Saturday, April 13th. The Bank had the highest participation in the event with six teams, featuring 33 employees across 15 departments. A great time was had by all - and the Bank’s bowling enthusiasts are proud to have been a part of supporting the event which raised over $24,000! DuPagePads will use part of the proceeds to build a kitchen for their clients where they will be able to prepare their own food. ABOC also sponsored the DuPagePads 18th annual Taste of Hope event on Friday, February 29th. Guests who attended the event noted the food was delicious, and the event raised $250,000 towards eliminating homelessness. In honor of Women’s History Month, Chicago WPF is pleased to highlight several esteemed women in our industry throughout the month of March. In this week’s member spotlight, Donna Howard, Vice President, Corporate Trust, Amalgamated Bank of Chicago, and Jane Ott, Principal Owner of North South Capital, share what drew them to public finance and the benefits of getting outside of your comfort zone in your career.

Donna Howard is a Vice President in Corporate Trust with Amalgamated Bank of Chicago. Donna joined ABOC in 2008. Donna has acquired a wide range of administrative experience in municipal debt which includes general obligation and revenue bonds, tax increment and educational financing, multifamily housing revenue bonds, supportive living facilities, variable rate demand bonds and escrows. Donna has over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. Donna received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of Illinois at Chicago, a master’s in business administration from Roosevelt University and has been a Certified Corporate Trust Specialist since 2012.

Q. What advice do you wish someone had given you earlier in your career?

A. Do not be afraid to venture outside your comfort zone and try something new. Continue to challenge yourself to learn no matter what stage of your career you are in. When you are learning continuously, you gain more skills and become flexible and adaptable in your career path.

Q. How can women better support and empower each other in this industry, and what initiatives have you seen or implemented to foster this type of collaboration?

A. Women can support each other in this industry by being an advocate for each other. We need to be willing to offer guidance, advise, and insight to help each other navigate challenges and advance in our careers. Mentoring has been especially important to me throughout my career. I have been fortunate to have had several great mentors along my career path and many of those relationships have lasted over the years.

Q. What are the most important attributes of successful leaders today?

A. Successful leaders need to be a visionary, have confidence, exhibit, and expect accountability from themselves and those around them, and have compassion.

Amalgamated Bank of Chicago is excited to celebrate , , and our own NCAA basketball star, Jenny Heinl (Senior Vice President, Loan Administration and CRA Officer). Jenny started playing basketball in grade school with the desire to be part of team. She made friends with the neighborhood boys and started playing but did not own her own basketball. After winning a free throw contest, Jenny’s coach gave her a basketball as a gift and she still has it today.

Title IX is a landmark gender equity law passed in 1972 which allowed girls to participate in high school sports. Because Title IX was passed, Jenny was able to play basketball. Jenny played basketball during college and later coached grade schoolers.

Phil also enjoyed a trip to Egypt where he had the “most exciting hike of his life” on Mount Sinai, also known as Moses Mountain.

Phil said “All these trips were made possible because of the flexibility that ABOC allows me to have. Some of these trips are over certain heavy payable dates for our department and my team is able to back me up while I’m out on vacation.”

This year’s Black History Month theme is African Americans and the Arts, and we are excited to highlight one of our very own Amalgamated Bank of Chicago talented creatives. Louie works in Lockbox/Business Services and his artwork can be seen throughout the office, most recently in the form of a calendar. Louie has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication and is currently enrolled at Academy of Art University for his Master of Fine Arts. Louie is able to pursue his artwork while working full-time at ABOC and meeting important deadlines for the Bank. Louie said “As long as I’m getting a steady paycheck, my discovery of being an artist will come in time. I just have to continue to believe in myself, as those in my circle do.”

When asked to describe what his artwork means to him, Louie said “When I produce my artwork, I want to represent diversity. I love to draw and paint any subject matter. Whatever mood I’m experiencing – whether it’s happy, sad, angry, lazy, or carefree – I’m expressing my visual feelings in my art."

Louie inherited his artistic ability from his late father who was an artist and photographer. While growing up, Louie was often considered a child prodigy and could draw before he was able to write his name. When he was learning to write, the pencil in his hand was often a signal to draw instead. A fun fact about Louie: he has created portraits for and been acknowledged by various celebrities including Jennifer Holliday, Deborah Cox, and Crystal Waters.

For the second year in a row, Amalgamated Bank of Chicago participated in an onsite and virtual food drive with Greater Chicago Food Depository to help end hunger and food insecurity. The Bank reached – and then exceeded – our team fundraising goal, which was set at $1000. ABOC more than doubled the goal with the final fundraising amount reaching $2,605. Greater Chicago Food Depository said “Thank you for being our champion and inviting your network to support us. Your efforts are critical to us achieving our mission.” $2,605 is enough to provide 7,815 meals for our neighbors in need! The Bank also participated in an onsite food drive where we were able to collect three large boxes of food.
