HEAL provides poverty relief and education for poor & marginalized rural village children.

When it comes to faith, our Lord tells us it is better to believe without seeing. When it comes to increasing your faith that HEAL is fulfilling its of educating poor and marginalized children, the opposite is true – !

Day 4 - Nigeria: Physical education day. The only football known in Nigeria is Euro style, which is the world's most popular sport. I brought a couple of American footballs with me and gave a lesson in American football. They loved it! Girls too! Not tackle yet, just touch.

Day three of my trip to Nigeria! Here Deacon Leo Okonkwo and the students of BOMCA academy pray the stations of the cross in the school chapel. Every Friday our students pray the stations with great devotion to Christ crucified. (1 Cor 1:22-25) For more info: www.healnigeria.org

The present hunger in Nigerian society threatens HEAL’s beneficiaries who are a part of it. Poor children need adequate nutrition every day so that they are strong and healthy enough to learn. We feed 350 students once per day and 68 boarding students 3 times per day, which means HEAL is responsible for serving 554 meals per day!

With the extremely volatile currency, we can’t continue hoping to acquire sufficient quantities of food at local village markets.

After 13 years of raucous dispute and controversy among local clergy about who their next Bishop should be, Pope Francis appointed last October a Claretian religious priest, Fr. Simeon Okezuo Nwobi, later installed as auxiliary Bishop of Ahiara in December.

Ahiara Catholics are celebrating this historic occasion. “A Bishop must serve the people of his diocese with compassion. With no Bishop at their side for 13 years, Ahiara residents have suffered great spiritual and physical hunger, just like many orphans,” says Rev. Leo Okonkwo.

The Bible says without a vision, the people perish (cf. Prov 29:18). Since 2010, Catholics of the Ahiara Diocese, in Imo State, Nigeria, HEAL’s mission territory, have been perishing without a vision because they have been without a spiritual leader to guide them.
