Congratulations to Dr. Maddie Benjamin, our newest associate veterinarian, for completing the rigorous 16 hour immersive canine and feline extraction wet lab at the International Veterinary Dental Institute. Dr. Benjamin joins the rest of our veterinary staff in completion of this intensive training coursework so that she is qualified and prepared to provide state of the art and best practice dental care to our patients. Pictured left to right Dr. Maddie Benjamin, course instructor Dr. Carolyn Lariviere, board certified veterinary dentist Dr. Brett Beckman, and course instructor Jodi Reed.
Dr. Duke attended a continuing education seminar with The International Veterinary Dental Institute lead by board certified dentist, Dr. Brett Beckman, and his instructors and amazing staff. It was an opportunity for Dr. Duke to meet with many colleagues for 2 days of veterinary dentistry lectures. Dr. Duke also got to visit The Turtle Hospital and meet a special rehabbed sea turtle named Montel that Duke Animal Hospital has sponsored through staff donations.
Please join us in welcoming our newest Associate Veterinarian to Team B, Dr. Madeline Benjamin! We are so excited to have her join our staff!
Dr. Benjamin's journey into veterinary medicine is a testament to her unwavering passion for animal care. Graduating with a Major in Biology and Minor in Chemistry from the University of Iowa, Dr. Benjamin's early experiences at a veterinary clinic solidified her dedication to the field. Pursuing her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, she immersed herself in various endeavors, including serving as Vice President of the Human-Animal Bond Association. Her commitment extended beyond academia as she collaborated with prisons, facilitating the pairing of inmates with shelter dogs for service dog training—an initiative showcasing her compassion and dedication to animal welfare.
During her collegiate journey, Dr. Benjamin also actively participated in the Veterinary Business Association and lent her expertise to the Wildlife Medical Clinic, further enriching her understanding of diverse aspects within the field.
Bringing her wealth of experience to our clinic, Dr. Benjamin is poised to forge meaningful connections with pet parents and their beloved companions. Her return to Chicago, accompanied by her beloved Fox Terrier/Pitbull mix, Noe, and her trusty bearded dragon, Lady, underscores her deep-rooted ties to the community.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Benjamin finds solace in the outdoors, culinary adventures, and the gripping narratives of horror thrillers.
There are more and more corporate chain veterinary clinics and "urgent care centers" popping up all around the north side of Chicago. Over the last few years, many of the neighborhood's longstanding veterinary hospitals have sold to corporations without changing the clinic name in order to keep their sale of ownership to corporate away from public knowledge.
Duke Animal Hospital remains as an independent and locally owned practice. Dr. Duke is a home owner and resident of the 47th Ward, a parent in the school community, an active member of her neighborhood, and a local business owner.
Corporate ownership in veterinary medicine, and other areas of healthcare, is rapidly expanding. This trend is evident in the proliferation of new corporate chain clinics throughout our neighborhood and the quiet sale of previously privately owned practices to corporations. It's crucial for pet parents who value independent, locally owned practices to be aware of this shift, particularly those who prioritize supporting locally owned medical establishments.

Meet Beaux and Genghis, the dynamic duo taking over Duke Animal Hospital today! Beaux, an adorable ‘fluffy’ French Bulldog, rocks a stunning blue coat that’s irresistible. On the other hand, Genghis, the majestic Tibetan Mastiff, turns heads with his handsome looks and regal demeanor. These cool canines are definitely stealing the spotlight with our staff today.
“🌍✈️ Meet Kumori, our globe-trotting Scottish Fold kitten, flown all the way from Kuwait through a wonderful rescue group! Perched on Dad’s shoulder, she’s giving Dr. Duke the skeptical ‘once-over’ before her check-up. Spoiler alert: She passed with flying colors and stole everyone’s hearts! 💖
Hedgehogs have a heart too! Foot Foot was a terrific patient today!
Meet Luna and Charlie Moe, the stars of our Cute Puppy Day at Duke Animal Hospital! Luna, the tiny 3 pound Pomeranian, strutted around with sass and a bounce in her step that defies gravity. Charlie Moe, the 4- month-old Cockapoo, melted our hearts with his playful energy. Both pups got a clean bill of health from Dr. Caraline Nack, but not before charming everyone on our team!
Thomas is a sophomore at Lane Tech College Prep who spent his Saturday shadowing Dr. Duke, observing, and assisting because he wanted to learn about veterinary medicine. We enjoyed hosting him and will be gratified to help launch him into a career as a veterinarian if that becomes his chosen path!
Ella acting as cheerful holiday waiting room greeter at Duke Animal Hospital!
Another fabulous Vet For A Day experience at Duke Animal Hospital. Mia and Eloise are sixth graders from Immaculate Conception - St. Joseph School. They joined us all day yesterday observing and assisting with treatment of dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and even a lizard. They watched Dr. Ochs in oral surgery, learned how to interpret x-rays, drew up vaccines and even got to hold a very nice bird. Lunch was Included! Thanks girls for your enthusiasm and attentiveness! Working with students is always a joy! Mia’s mom won this event at the Lane Tech Gala auction.
Halloween hilarity at Duke Animal Hospital! Four adventurous staff decided to channel their inner Dr. Duke – costumes included curly wigs, dangly earrings, purple tunic tops and all. They roamed the hospital all day, and even the real Dr. Duke lost track of herself! Can you spot the true Dr. Duke in these photos? 🎃🕵️♂️
Christina and her Toy Poodle squad at Duke Animal Hospital: Celine, the furry complainant, venting about the antics of Joonie and Phoenix. While Celine spills the canine drama, Joonie and Phoenix strike a pose, and somewhere up there, Autumn's probably rolling her eyes at the chaos. Paws and laughter, reigning supreme!
Arlo’s first time at the Gomez house!
His mama contacted me this morning in a bind and needed a pet sitter today through the weekend. Normally I make dogs do a trial beforehand, but since it’s not a super busy weekend and she swore he was the best boy (everyone says that, right? 😜) I said ok.
He is in fact the best boy!
Welcome to the group, Arlo!

A heartwarming, tearful reunion today as Samantha, a beautiful young dog recently adopted from Ecuador, was joyfully reunited with her family, all thanks to a tiny microchip! In this touching moment, you see Fabian and Kami, the kind souls who discovered Samantha as a stray today and brought her to Duke Animal Hospital. Our staff scanned for a microchip, which revealed her identity, allowing us to contact the registered owner, Andrea, who had been tirelessly searching for Samantha for eight long days.
The second image captures Andrea and her son, their faces beaming with happiness as they embrace Samantha once more. This reunion, made even more poignant by Samantha’s international journey, was filled with tears of joy, laughter, and immense gratitude towards Fabian and Kami for their heroic rescue. Truly, microchips have once again proven their invaluable role in reuniting beloved pets with their families, transcending borders and distance. Cheers to microchips!
A few of our patients today!
