FunkStick:Post-Disco Mood Board - The Saint (pt. 1)

Along with the Paradise Garage, The Saint was one of the two clubs which defined Gay nightlife in NYC in the 80s. Operating from 1980-1988, The Saint (called “The Vatican of Disco”) was the creation of Bruce Mailman who also owned the neighboring New Saint Mark Baths. It cost $4.6 Million in 1980 ($18.5 Million today).

In addition to having a sound system with nearly 500 speakers, The Saint was known for its circular dance floor topped by a planetarium dome which served as a palette for lighting effects, including scenes of a nighttime sky, sunrise, or the cosmos. A circular hole at the top of the dome could be automatically opened and closed to allow a large mirrored disco ball to be lowered into the space. In the center of the dance floor was a circular light tree constructed on a hydraulic lift which contained 1500 lights and a rotating star projector, ten times brighter than those used in planetariums.

Hey, y’all!

Thank you so much for showing up to make FunkStick such a good time! It’s my intention for these events to be a celebration of Q***rness and a place where folks from all different segments of the LGBTQIA+ community are embraced and have fun.

In so many spaces and at so many events within our community, there are a bunch of people who look the same and come from similar backgrounds. Folks who don’t fit into that mold can feel out of place or unwelcome. I don’t want that to be the vibe at FunkStick. I want to make sure that people of all colors / backgrounds / ethnicities / weights / abilities / bodies / genders / gender expressions / financial capabilities feel that you are welcomed here and that this is a place for you.

FunkStick operates on a sliding scale ticketing model. Regular tickets are $12 presale and $15 at the door. There is also a tier with $7 tickets. These are intended for people experiencing financial hardship, Femmes and female identifying people, BIPOC, GNC, and Trans folks who might not always feel welcome at events that have a predominantly white cis gay male crowd.

We want you here. I hope that the more different folks from different backgrounds we have partying with us, the less likely anyone is to feel marginalized or left out. There’s strength in numbers.

This is going to be on the honor system. It costs money to put this event on, and I trust that you all will do what’s right. If you want to come party, are really strapped for cash, and any form of cover charge is a barrier for you, shoot me a DM and we can figure something out. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
