The IPA welcomed its new leadership team on June 15th. Today, we officially welcome Dr. Sue Bae as the president, Dr. Kristina Pecora as President-Elect, and thank our immediate past president Dr. Colin Ennis for his dedication to the IPA. Program Description
“Instead of asking what are people‘s roots, we ought to think about what are their routes, the different points by which they have come to be now; they are, in a sense, the sum of those
differences.” (Hall, Stuart, 1999)
In this workshop, we will delve into the intricate pathways that shape who we are in the present moment. Drawing from Stuart Hall's (1999) insightful perspective, we will explore not
just our roots, but the diverse routes that have led us here, acknowledging that our identities are the sum of these multifaceted journeys. Participants are invited to engage in an interactive workshop aimed at defining and understanding intergenerational trauma and resilience. Through
didactic presentation, self-reflection, and exploration, we will unravel the layers of our migration stories, recognizing how they intersect with therapeutic dynamics and are clinically applied.

Last October, our long-time Executive Director, Marsha Karey, announced she would be leaving her position. We were saddened at the thought of her stepping down, but thrilled that she’d be pursuing new ventures. We’ll miss her but we’re also very lucky that she’ll be staying on part time to help us in the transition.
After a thorough search, IPA hired Dr. Litesa Wallace (Ed.D.) to replace her. As you’ll read in her bio below, Dr. Wallace brings significant experience in psychology and legislation having run for Lieutenant Governor of IL and served as an IL State Representative. Your entire IPA Council is excited for what Dr. Wallace’s experience means for Psychologists as well as all the mental health needs of the residents of IL. We’re fortunate to have found a woman of so many talents and with such an incisive point of view for IPA’s presence in Springfield. Please read her entire bio below and help us welcome Dr. Wallace.

Dr. Wallace Biography
Dr. Litesa Wallace is an esteemed educator, researcher, and former Illinois State Representative known for her deep commitment to public service and educational empowerment. Throughout her tenure from 2014 to 2019, she was recognized as one of the most knowledgeable legislators in Springfield, adept at securing broad bipartisan support for significant legislative achievements. Notable among these were expansions in mental healthcare access, the Foster Children Bill of Rights, banning the so-called Gay Panic Defense, working to address College Student Hunger, and the passage of the Learning With Dignity Act. As a respected member of the legislature, she has also served as vice chair of the House Human Services Committee and established and chaired the Illinois House Economic Justice and Equity Committee.
Dr. Wallace holds a Bachelor of Arts in Individual Studies, a Master of Science in Applied Family and Child Studies with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy, and an Educational Doctorate in Educational Psychology. Her academic accomplishments have enriched her roles as a university instructor in sociology, educational psychology, and career planning. Her interdisciplinary academic and professional achievements have significantly influenced both policy-making and higher education.
Beyond the legislature, Dr. Wallace has made substantial contributions as a consultant and lobbyist, particularly in energy and healthcare accessibility policy, helping to alleviate energy poverty in Pembroke, Illinois (after a 40 year stalemate) and working to bring access to quality healthcare to those experiencing poverty throughout the state.
Currently residing in Rockford with her son, Dr. Wallace continues to be a pivotal figure in advocating for educational and economic justice while fostering community empowerment and lifelong learning.

Visionary: my bus driver Ernie
I love seeing climate change advocacy and resilience everywhere!
My bus driver Ernie and I started talking about green initiatives. He was so pleased to tell met about PACE suburban transit just purchasing 20 Electric buses. PACE is on their way to fully replacing every bus with cleaner energy options. He is encouraged that, "I'm seeing new riders on routes that usually don't have many passengers." He envisions a future where most of us use public transportation and our cars are more just fun toys. For now he is happy to see people commuting 2-3 times a week. "Every little bit helps."
So take Ernie's advice. Hop on the bus once a week. We are all in this together.

Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy has been demonstrated to be effective in treating individuals who have been diagnosed with serious mental health conditions (Grant, Bredemeier, & Beck, 2017). The same principles can be applied to treating clients with depression. In a recovery orientation, therapists focus on helping clients live the life they want, in alignment with their values and
aspirations. The goal of treatment is to strengthen their sense of connection, hope, purpose, empowerment, safety, well-being, competence, and control. There is relatively less focus on decreasing depressive symptoms and relatively more on eliciting positive emotion in session and between sessions, along with a stronger focus on strengthening positive cognitions.
