CDOT oversees the public way--streets, sidewalks, bridges, alleys and other places you walk on, drive on, or ride a bike on.
We handle design, construction, maintenance and management of streets, sidewalks, alleys, bridges, bike and pedestrian facilities, transit stations, streetlights, traffic signals, signs and pavement markings, streetscapes and sustainable design. We work to make sure the public way functions safely and efficiently.
Watch the brand new Damen Green Line Chicago Transit Authority station take shape! The station opened this week, filling a 1.5-mile service gap between Ashland and California stops, restoring rail service to the neighborhood for the first time since the original station closed in 1948. F.H. Paschen.
What a day for the Near West Side and Chicago! The new Damen Green Line station officially opened yesterday, offering equitable and efficient transit for residents, supporting jobs in the Kinzie Industrial Corridor, and accommodating large crowds attending events at the nearby United Center. The station is directly across from the Chicago Housing Authority’s upcoming Westhaven Park IID, an equitable transit-oriented development (eTOD) project adding 96 mixed-income apartments in the community.
CDOT is proud to have administered this project in collaboration with Chicago Transit Authority. Beautifully designed by Perkins&Will, it features a grand stair, public art, and a glass bridge offering skyline views.
The North DuSable Lake Shore Drive study will enhance passenger comfort both going to and from bus stops, especially along northbound Inner Drive. And the existing narrow spaces between Inner and Outer Drive will be widened, landscaped, and equipped with continuous sidewalks and park paths to enhance the safety, comfort, and overall experience of entering Lincoln Park from across Inner Drive.
Join us on August 8 for an open house and learn more about the project at northdusablelsd.org
The North DuSable Lake Shore Drive study aims to make accessing the lakefront easier and more comfortable for people walking, biking, and rolling. East-west access points will be increased from 22 to 27, achieving ADA-compliant lakefront access every 1/4 mile or less. Path widths and underpass heights will be increased to improve visibility, safety and better accommodate existing and future users.

The North DuSable Lake Shore Drive study aims to enhance the experience for people using CTA’s north lakefront express bus services, and increase opportunities for transit access to the lakefront. Improvements to transit mobility on the Inner and Outer Drives, including bus-only lanes on ramps where buses experience the most delays, will reduce transit travel times by over 25%.
