Technology is driving gun crime into Chicago but Chicago could use
Tech Surveillance to at least get back even and better reduce gun crime within the city limits.

Gun violence continues to plague Chicago, with incidents becoming distressingly frequent at popular spots like 31st Street Beach. While the city grapples with this persistent issue, tech surveillance offers a promising solution to help curb these violent outbreaks. Based on my recent experiences working with Flock Safety cameras, I believe that implementing advanced surveillance technology could significantly reduce gun crime in Chicago.

Last year, I had the opportunity to work on a contract to winterize Flock Safety cameras. These cameras, equipped with advanced recognition capabilities, can capture not only license plates but also vehicle make, model, and color. During the project, we covered numerous collar cities and neighborhoods around Chicago, where this technology has been effectively utilized. However, a concerning side effect was noticeable: crime appeared to be driven into Chicago, which does not widely employ this technology.

The effectiveness of these surveillance systems is evident. For instance, areas around Chicago have seen a reduction in crime due to the deployment of these cameras. However, in places like 31st Street Beach, a popular venue for live music and family gatherings, shootings have been a regular occurrence every weekend this summer. Despite a consistent police presence, the venue was forced to close early by the mayor, imposing a 9 pm curfew to prevent further incidents.

Reflecting on a memorable visit to 31st Street Beach last year with my family, I can't help but think about how different things might be with the right technology in place. The band was fantastic, the atmosphere was lively, and the presence of law enforcement was reassuring. My wife, teenage grandson, 5-year-old granddaughter, and daughter, a new 6th grade teacher, joined me for what was supposed to be an evening of fun and music. We were seated just 20 feet from the band, which played classic R&B hits that had everyone dancing. My granddaughter even had the chance to dance between the bass player and the lead singer, creating a cherished memory for our family. The venue featured a wonderful cash bar and food concession, making it a perfect evening out.

Yet, despite the visible police presence, shootings have persisted at this beloved venue. If Chicago were to adopt License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras, the vehicles entering and leaving the area could be logged in a database. This data could then be analyzed to identify patterns and connections between vehicles present at multiple crime scenes, facilitating more effective policing and quicker apprehension of offenders.

Imagine a scenario where LPR cameras are installed at key entry and exit points around 31st Street Beach. Every vehicle passing through would be recorded, capturing vital details such as license plates, make, model, and color. In the event of a shooting, law enforcement could quickly access this database to identify suspect vehicles. By cross-referencing this data with reports from other crime scenes, police could establish links between incidents, track the movements of suspected criminals, and potentially prevent future crimes.

Additionally, these cameras could provide real-time alerts to law enforcement when a vehicle associated with previous criminal activity enters the area. This proactive approach would enable police to respond more swiftly to potential threats, enhancing their ability to protect the public.

Tech surveillance, such as the systems used by Flock Safety, offers a valuable tool in the fight against gun crime. By integrating these technologies into Chicago’s anti-crime efforts, we could create a more comprehensive approach to law enforcement. The data collected by LPR cameras would enable police to track and analyze vehicle movements, helping to identify and apprehend suspects more efficiently. This, combined with other anti-crime technologies, could significantly reduce the incidence of shootings and other violent crimes.

Moreover, the use of surveillance technology could help restore a sense of safety and normalcy to places like 31st Street Beach. Families and music lovers should be able to enjoy their evenings without the looming threat of violence. By leveraging advanced tech surveillance, we can work towards making Chicago a safer city for all its residents.

In conclusion, the deployment of tech surveillance systems is not just a matter of enhancing police capabilities; it’s about reclaiming our public spaces and ensuring the safety of our communities. Chicago must consider adopting these technologies to prevent crime from driving into the city and to protect its residents from the scourge of violence.

There have been several incidents where networks have been compromised due to vulnerabilities in surveillance cameras. Here are a few notable examples:

Mirai Botnet (2016): One of the largest known Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks was orchestrated using compromised IoT devices, including surveillance cameras. Mirai malware scanned the internet for vulnerable devices with default credentials, turning them into botnets that launched massive DDoS attacks.

Washington, D.C. (2017): In 2017, Washington, D.C. police reported that 70% of their CCTV cameras were compromised just before the 2017 presidential inauguration. The attack allowed unauthorized access to live feeds and recorded footage.

Verkada (2021): In March 2021, a group of hackers gained access to live feeds of 150,000 surveillance cameras from Verkada, a cloud-based security camera provider. The breach affected various organizations, including hospitals, schools, and companies.

Pen Test Partners (Various Instances): Security researchers from Pen Test Partners have demonstrated multiple vulnerabilities in various brands of IP cameras over the years. These include weaknesses in firmware, default credentials, and lack of encryption, leading to potential network compromises.

SecurView Cameras (2020): In 2020, researchers discovered critical vulnerabilities in SecurView cameras that allowed attackers to take control of the devices remotely. This included accessing live feeds, manipulating settings, and potentially gaining access to the network they were connected to.

These incidents highlight the importance of securing surveillance camera networks against cyber threats. Implementing strong security practices, such as regularly updating firmware, changing default credentials, and segmenting networks, can mitigate these risks significantly.
