Yay for 20 years of Aloha! Mahalo to our friends from for creating this Spam Musubi Cake for us to celebrate!!
When my dad, Bill, immigrated to the US, his goal was simple - to provide a better life for his family. He worked multiple jobs to stay afloat. He took all the opportunities that were given to him. He leaned into his mentors for guidance. He lived on outer islands just to work. I hardly saw him when I was in high school. But those sacrifices and that determination led him to Aloha. Some 4,000 miles from home, he took a risk to introduce local Hawaiian food to Chicago. With the help of my brother (Ivan) and 2 business partners (Steven & Tony), Aloha Grill opened its doors on this day 20 years ago. (Years later, we had a little name change to Aloha Eats.)
As we celebrate this huge milestone without my dad, I think of how proud he would be to see it. Did he ever think we would still be here 20 years later? Did he know the impact he made by bringing Aloha to Chicago? Because of him, we have community. Because of this, we have a vessel for friendship, education, and connection.
A special shout out to the staff, who carries us day in and day out. Not only could this not have survived without you, it thrives with you.
Mahalo for your support all these years. It is only because of you we can continue to do what we do. It is because of you I get to do my dad proud. I will be forever grateful for that. 🧡

🌺Who are We?
Kaibigian ng Lahaina is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, initiated by Lahaina-grown residents motivated to promote and facilitate the empowerment, enhancement and sustainability of Filipino and immigrant communities in West Maui. 🤝What are we doing?
Currently, recovery and resiliency efforts are the top of our priorities. We are doing this through identifying and guiding individuals and families who are in the most immediate need for assistance and services. Our current project is to collect comprehensive survivor data that will help to identify persons needing gap or immediate assistance while also creating databases for anticipated case management and empirical data that will support advocacy efforts.
In the long-term, Kaibigan ng Lahaina is committed to establish a physical space that will provide resource and case management services through language access, as well as promote the distinct multi-cultural character of Lahaina. While we anticipate funding for such directed purposes will be achieved through grants, we are strong believers in the Filipino value of “bayanihan” - a collective effort to help one another in big and small ways. While culture is a large part of who we are, we also maintain a “culture of Lahaina”, meaning our foremost promise to pursue and commit to the good of the community as a whole. We believe this cannot be done without immigrant communities and hence we are leading the challenge in these narratives and efforts.
