Selling Fast - East Texas Hot Links at Court Theatre
Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, East Texas Hot Links is simultaneously a gripping character study, a lyrical masterpiece, and a juggernaut of suspense. It is 1955 in the piney woods of East Texas and racial tensions are high, yet the Top o’ the Hill Café remains a haven. There, regulars share stories, joke, unwind, and trade friendly barbs. The café is a refuge that keeps the outside world at bay, until a mysterious omen forces the outside in.
Court’s 2024/25 season opener is a tribute to Resident Artist and Director Ron OJ Parson’s (Two Trains Running) first production in Chicago, his deep collaboration with playwright Eugene Lee, and the founding of Onyx Theatre Ensemble, the storied theatre company that first produced East Texas Hot Links in Chicago thirty years ago. By returning to Top o’ the Hill Café decades later, Parson asserts East Texas’s place in the modern theatrical canon and honors the legacy of Onyx.

Join for SCREEN & STAGE, their first subscription concert of Chicago Sinfonietta’s 2024-25 Season. Maestra Mei-Ann Chen curated musical selections from global pop culture, offering patrons a lively experience at the intersection of popular and classical music.
The concert begins honoring the newest female superheroes to hit the big screen with Laura Karpman’s film suite Higher. Further. Faster. Together. from the blockbuster movie The Marvels. Next, we cross the seas to explore Japanese fandom with Joe Hisaishi’sKiki’s Delivery Service, whose risk-taking heroine charms and enchants with whimsical melodies from the anime film, a globally popular piece for over 40 years!
Vocalist Laurin Talese takes the stage for a sweeping Broadway tribute and shares her own original composition, “This Love,” arranged for orchestra.
Then 20-something Mexican composer Horacio Fernández invokes a Latin dance club scene with Tumbao (Latin Suite for Orchestra), featuring pulsating rhythms inspired by Salsa, Bachata, and Reggaeton. Never have you heard Reggaeton on an orchestral stage!
The performance closes with a perennial classic and audience favorite, Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Comprising dance themes and motifs from the original stage work, it captures the essence of the story’s tension, passion, and energy. Through vivid orchestration and rhythmic complexity, Bernstein intertwines elements of jazz, Latin, and classical music, creating a vibrant tapestry of sound that will leave you energized and ready to “Mambo!”

Hot This Weekend! - Amadeus by Peter Shaffer | Parker Players Theater Company at The Barrington
This classic story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the foppish young prodigy, arriving in Vienna determined to make his mark, remains the same. Court composer Antonio Salieri, who awestruck by the young genius and seized with an obsessive jealousy, begins a war with Mozart, with music, and ultimately with God, also remains the same. BUT, PPTC presents this levity-filled drama whose scope is as operatic as it comes, as an intimate, immersive, and slightly anarchic new experience.
Directed by Chris Causer and Jenilee Houghton, and featuring a talented ensemble of actors, we invite you into the punk rock world where Mozart disrupts the musical traditions of Emperor King Joseph II Vienna court.

Last Chance This Weekend for Lavender Men | About Face Theatre at The Den Theatre
Taffeta is a fat, multi-racial femme with a unique form of q***r magic: she can conjure dead historical figures. In this energetic and surreal play, Taffeta invites audiences along as she summons none other than President Abraham Lincoln and his handsome young law clerk Elmer Ellsworth to her stage. Playing every other character in Abe and Elmer’s gay narrative, Taffeta uses this fantasia to confront issues of visibility, race, and LGBTQ+ inclusion. But is any of this historically accurate? Sit down, honey, that’s not what we’re here for. Lavender Men is an embrace to every q***r, fat person of color who has been ignored, neglected, or erased for unapologetically being themselves.
Masks are required for the 5/25 3pm performance and 6/1 3pm performance.
