GP recently participated in the Chicago Architecture Center’s annual Girls Build! Day, where girls ages 11-17 joined in STEAM activities focused around architecture, design and engineering. To introduce the girls to the world of architecture in hopes of peaking their interests for a future career, the girls were tasked to “Design Your Own Façade”. Using plexiglass and markers, the girls got creative with their designs and patterns, and their facades were hung on a scaled model structure for them to envision their masterpiece.

Alcove Archdaily Building of the Year Nomination
GP’s Alcove was recently nominated for the ArchDaily 2024 Building of the Year Awards. The firm’s first completed project in Nashville, the 34-story residential tower is positioned on a prime site in downtown adjacent to the Amazon-anchored Nashville Yards development. The tower footprint maximizes the site, with the building providing 32 studios, 224 one-bedroom units and 100 two-bedroom units. Two second-floor units have adjoining, private outdoor terraces. The building façade uses an intricate window wall featuring two varying shades of glazed metal panels, which frame floor-to-ceiling glass for each unit. As part of the overall program, signature amenity spaces are creatively placed within four warm-toned cutouts, or alcoves, that feature intimate, communal outdoor terraces. Two of the 75-foot-tall terraces face east toward the Nashville skyline, and two others face west, with unobstructed sunset views.

American Architecture Awards
Two GP projects received the 2023 American Architecture Award, sponsored by The Chicago Athenaeum International Museum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies!
The first recipient, Guangxi China Resources Tower, is an 86-story mixed-use skyscraper in Nanning, China, that includes the Shangri-La Nanning hotel and features the world’s highest outdoor pool. The second recipient, 320 South Canal, is Chicago’s healthiest office tower, a 51-story building and integrated public park with an overall focus on tenant health and wellness.
From a shortlist of 450 projects, the jury selected over 150 as the best new buildings designed and constructed by American architects in the U.S. and abroad, and by international architects for buildings designed and built in the United States.

One Chicago was recently named a 2023 Design Excellence Award winner by AIA Chicago. The prestigious juried competition recognizes projects that exemplify excellence in architectural design on all levels and demonstrates the highest standards to which AIA members aspire. One Chicago is a 2,200,000-square-foot mixed-use development that features two residential towers and a shared podium. At 971 feet, the 77-story main tower is the city’s tallest all-residential building and its 8th tallest overall. Congratulations to the entire project team, including JDL Development, Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture, Power Construction and Magnusson Klemencic Associates, among many others.
1900 Lawrence Topping Out
1900 Lawrence, developed by Riverside Investment & Development, held its topping out ceremony this week, on August 30. As GP’s first project in Denver, Colorado, this 31-story, Class A office tower includes 700,000 square feet of office space on 24 floors, six levels of podium parking, two levels of underground parking, and 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail across multiple venues.
Designed to provide seamless connections between indoor and outdoor spaces throughout, the building features a stepped massing that helps facilitate this integration. The shifts in the building open a total of 11 private tenant terraces, and a tenant lounge on Level 7 leads to a larger communal amenity terrace that features views of the Front Range, Coors Field and Skyline Park. Doubling as a green roof for the parking podium, the amenity terrace includes a variety of landscape features and hardscape seating. Large, operable glass walls open up the rest of the amenity level, which includes premier common facilities such as a state-of-the-art fitness center and a multi-use conference center.
Coppia Construction Progress
GP’s Coppia residential tower is on the rise! Located in Chicago’s West Loop, the 19-story building includes 298 apartments, along with associated parking and retail. Anchoring the newly created south end of Aberdeen Street, the building is oriented in an east-west direction, with its main entry facing north toward the heart of the West Loop. Developed by The Pizzuti Companies, the project is expected to be completed in 2024.
GP's City in a Snow Globe
The Chicago Architecture Center’s “City in a Snow Globe” holiday exhibition opened this past weekend, showcasing over two dozen snow globes created by local architecture firms and designers. Each participating firm was asked to design around the theme of embracing Chicago winters. The GP globe features 150 North Riverside as a festive holiday tree, with a long red ladder positioned for playful gnomes to do their decorating. The exhibit will be on display through February 17, 2023.
Chicago Innovation Award Winner - Pepper Family Wildlife Center
Congratulations to Lincoln Park Zoo for receiving the 2022 Chicago Innovation Award for the Pepper Family Wildlife Center! The 21st annual awards event took place last night at Morgan Manufacturing, honoring 21 winners out of 365 nominees. The Pepper Family Wildlife Center, designed by GP in collaboration with PJA Architects + Landscape Architects, was recognized as the most state-of-the-art lion habitat in the U.S., emphasizing significant advancements in animal welfare science in a reimagined and renovated facility driven by years of lion behavior and space-use data. The dynamic new habitat features thermal comfort zones, multiple micro-climates, food ziplines for lion enrichment, and a much more immersive, “nose-to-nose” visitor experience than ever before. The facility has now set a new standard for zoos across the country.
The event marked the third time a GP project has received the Chicago Innovation Award, with the core-supported 150 North Riverside office tower recognized in 2017, and the first-ever LEED-CS Gold building, 111 South Wacker, receiving the honor in 2006. This year’s program included more than 500 attendees across all industries, representing large and small companies, for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, and high-tech, low-tech and no-tech businesses. Together, these groups demonstrate the breadth of innovation that is unique to the Chicago area.

Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperative Zone East Wing 1
GP recently submitted a competition entry for a mixed-use development in the Huanggang Port area in China. The Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Zone East Wing 1 consists of a 300-meter office tower, two residential towers and a retail podium. The dynamic, curving forms expressed and infused throughout the architecture are inspired by the development goals of the zone—focused on technological innovation and incubation.
At the core of the site is an inviting retail mall, scaled to the neighborhood. The retail program is designed to respond to the needs of the people in the community, including restaurants, tech stores, home convenience and education. The architecture is designed to create great spaces for gathering with friends, colleagues and family.
Rising up the office tower, the facade is a kinetic expression, mimicking the gesture of a “digital wave.” A dynamic curvature starts with the overall tower form, but as one gets closer, the array of the facade modules further reinforces this expression. This texture creates a dynamic, glistening and lively form that distinguishes itself on the skyline. The “scales” on the façade are also functional, providing operable ventilation that allows fresh air into the building.
