GP’s newest residential building was recently featured in Urbanize Chicago. Developed by The Pizzuti Companies, Coppia is located in Chicago’s West Loop at 1101 W. Van Buren, anchoring the newly created south end of Aberdeen Street just north of the Eisenhower Expressway. Designed by GP with interiors by Gensler, the 19-story tower includes 298 apartments and faces north with a view of the Chicago skyline. This ideal setting paired with the geometric figures on the building’s façade inspired the name Coppia. Translated from Italian as "couple,” referencing the building’s position embracing multiple neighborhoods, this dynamic area is the confluence of the popular Fulton Market District, the Greektown Neighborhood, and the Illinois Medical District. GP recently participated in the Chicago Architecture Center’s annual Girls Build! Day, where girls ages 11-17 joined in STEAM activities focused around architecture, design and engineering. To introduce the girls to the world of architecture in hopes of peaking their interests for a future career, the girls were tasked to “Design Your Own Façade”. Using plexiglass and markers, the girls got creative with their designs and patterns, and their facades were hung on a scaled model structure for them to envision their masterpiece.

The Architect's Newspaper recently featured GP’s latest renderings for what will become Nashville’s tallest tower: Paramount. Designed by GP and developed by Giarratana LLC, the building is located at 1010 Church Street downtown. The tower will stand at 60 stories and 750 feet tall upon completion, surpassing the 617-foot-tall AT&T Building, the city’s current tallest. The new tower is composed of 360 apartments, 140 condominiums, associated amenities, and a 517-space parking garage. The project also includes a 60,000-square-foot state-of-the-art addition to the neighboring Downtown The Y. Paramount is the third building along Church Street by the same architect-developer team, with the Alcove building at 900 Church opening last summer and the Prime building at 801 Church opening later this year. The three multifamily residential buildings sit across from the 17-acre Amazon-anchored Nashville Yards development, currently under construction. GP recently visited the construction site at Brookfield Zoo Chicago’s Tropical Forests habitat. The new Gorilla Conservation Center features learning spaces for the public and will be home to the King Conservation Leadership Academy, which provides science programming with an emphasis on career and college readiness for high school students. The space will have two-story-high glass windows stretching along two walls so that guests inside the building can view gorillas in their new outdoor environment. Tropical Forests is scheduled for completion in 2025.

Three GP projects in China are in advanced stages of construction:

Beijing Poly Future Science and Technology Park is a 296,000-square-meter mixed-use development with office, hotel, serviced apartment and retail components linked together by an expansive sky platform. This iconic platform, with its open portals and structural expression, provides a unique outdoor amenity to office tenants, exciting event space for the hotel tower, and a visual landmark at the heart of the new commercial district.

Wenzhou Harbor Landmark Tower is a 117,000-square-meter mixed-use complex that features a striking 300-meter tower that includes office space, high-end residential units, fully furnished serviced apartments, and a retail and entertainment center. The 63-story signature office tower brings a distinctive façade and a highly visible illuminated crown to the city’s skyline—a bold statement that will define a landmark in the developing metropolitan area.

MGM Diaoyutai Shenzhen Prince Bay is a 50,000-square-meter development led by China Merchants Shekou Holdings. The project features a 28-story tower that will serve as the home for a new 298-key MGM hotel.

GP’s first Denver project, 1900 Lawrence, led by Riverside Investment & Development is nearing completion! Designed to provide seamless connections between indoor and outdoor spaces throughout, the building features a stepped massing that helps facilitate this integration. The shifts in the building open a total of 11 private tenant terraces, and a tenant lounge on Level 7 leads to a larger communal amenity terrace that features views of the Front Range, Coors Field and Skyline Park. The building lobby is designed as an extension of the outdoor space, with a highly transparent glass façade that makes the interior and exterior spaces read as one. The back of the lobby features a full-height, folded travertine wall, which resembles the nearby mountains.

GP recently celebrated the official groundbreaking for the Taichung High-Speed Rail Mixed-Use Center. Conveniently located at the nexus of a highway, metro and high-speed rail lines along the west coast of Taiwan, the expansive site of this 400,000-square-meter mixed-use development is just southwest of the city of Taichung. The 15-hectare project site features a D-One retail and entertainment center, designed by Benoy, along with two towers by GP.

Designed to complement the overall TOD complex, the two towers are integrated with the retail and entertainment center. A five-star hotel sits atop the retail center to the north, elongated in the direction of highway traffic, with a large central atrium overlooking the retail rooftop circulation. A multitenant office tower rises on the southeast corner of the site, closer to commuter rail lines. Like the hotel, a language of wrapping vertical piers frames a structure of diagonal bronze, bracing against seismic loads, and relating to interior atria and green space. The tower design was inspired by the verticality of bamboo forests and the horizontal steps of terraced, agricultural hillsides. Together these concepts speak to the lush green mountains of Taiwan and were the point of departure for the linear and vegetated facades.

GP is a proud sponsor of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) 2024 International Conference, taking place in London and Paris on September 23–27. This year’s theme, New or Renew, explores the choice between new buildings and cities, or the adaptation of the existing for the sake of environmental, economic and social sustainability. GP Partner and Design Director Paul De Santis, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP, is serving as a juror for the Future Project Award category, and Principal Vladimir Andrejevic, AIA, will present Alcove, an Award of Excellence recipient in the Best Tall Building 100-199 meters category.

06/14/2024

Alcove, GP’s first project in Nashville, Tennessee, was honored with an Award of Excellence in the Best Tall Building 100-199 meters category, as part of the 2024 CTBUH Awards. Sponsored by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), the annual awards program recognizes extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment. Projects, innovations and practices are recognized in more than 20 categories and subcategories, including best tall building, urban habitat, innovation, repositioning, construction and structure, among others.

Alcove is positioned on a prime site in downtown Nashville, adjacent to the 17-acre, Amazon-anchored Nashville Yards development. The new 34-story, 419-foot-tall apartment tower includes 356 units. The building features such amenities as a fitness room, rooftop game room, two pools and several communal alcoves. GP designed the building as well as the interiors.

The building is composed as a series of stacked, shifted cubes organized in pairs on four levels. The unique arrangement opens up inner sections of the building and allows for unique views and alcoves. The tower footprint maximizes the site, with the building providing 32 studios, 224 one-bedroom units and 100 two-bedroom units. Two second-floor units have adjoining, private outdoor terraces. The building façade uses an intricate window wall featuring two varying shades of glazed metal panels, which frame floor-to-ceiling glass for each unit.

The project will be presented as part of the CTBUH International Conference taking place in London this September, and a full list of this year’s honorees can be found on the CTBUH website: https://ctbuhconference.com/award-of-excellence-winners/.

GP’s 5 City Blvd celebrated its topping out at a ceremony last week. Developed by Convexity Properties and located in Nashville, Tennessee, the building features 350,000 square feet of Class A office space, 15,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, and integrated parking with more than 900 stalls across multiple levels. A variety of floor plates cater to different tenant needs, and a robust amenity program, focused on wellness, sets a new standard in the marketplace.

The architectural expression for the project is both distinct and site responsive. The building appears to “peel and unfold” along the eastern façade, echoing the site’s geometry while creating a series of large-scale stepped terraces that provide outdoor amenity spaces with unobstructed views of the Nashville skyline. High-performance, floor-to-ceiling glass is used throughout all commercial spaces, and copper-toned vertical fins provide passive shading while referencing the coloring of the native clay bodies originally found on the site.

GP recently completed the Financial Street Shanghai Railway Station Mixed-Use project in Shanghai. Developed by Financial Street Holding Co., the 264,000-square-meter complex is located on two parcels just north of the Shanghai Railway Station.

The project’s primary western parcel features five main buildings, including 131,000 square meters of office space catering to a variety of tenants, 54,000 square meters of retail, 22,000 square meters of loft apartment space, and a 5,000-square-meter cultural center. The eastern parcel includes a 15,000-square-meter headquarters office building and a complex with 45,000 square meters of loft apartment space above a 15,000-square-meter retail podium.

The project creates a thriving district center—an urban destination that serves as a highly visible landmark with architecture, landscape and cultural elements fully integrated in order to enhance connectivity and define a true sense of place for the emerging district. Located adjacent to a major railway interchange, the development serves as an “attractor,” drawing people into the district from the city and other transportation hubs. Pedestrian routes above and below grade and multiple bridge links provide strategic connections to the public transportation system, as well as to adjacent parcels, neighboring developments and existing city networks.

GP and Lead8 collaborated on the overall master plan for the two parcels. GP led the planning and design of all the office and residential buildings on the western parcel and developed the exterior design for the office and residential buildings on the eastern parcel. Lead8 directed the planning and design of all the retail podiums on both parcels.

GP celebrates International Women's Day and recognizes the women who are an integral part of our global practice. The GP Women’s Group recently wrapped up a series of activities taking place over the last several weeks leading up to today, including the Women’s Group Summit, GP Women’s Group Lunch-and-Learn, and the Sarah's Circle Winter Walk. The summit gathered leaders of women's groups from several Chicago architecture firms. The groups discussed individual successes, challenges and how best to work together. The lunch-and-learn event highlighted the leadership of GP women, both internally on projects and externally through industry organizations like CSI Chicago, Chicago Women In Architecture, and the Chicago Women in Architecture Foundation. Benefiting Sarah’s Circle, an organization focused on ending homelessness for women, the Winter Walk highlighted the harsh reality of women’s homelessness during Chicago’s particularly cold winters. Several GP women participated in the event to support the cause.

In addition to these recent events, the GP Women's Group is hosting a building-wide clothing drive for Dress for Success. This organization is the leading global nonprofit employment resource for unemployed and underemployed women with the mission to promote the economic independence of women by providing professional attire, a network of support, and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. With this drive, the women of GP hope to empower more women to reach their full professional potential.
