Your windshield is an important component of your car’s built-in safety features. Because of how it is manufactured, the windshield glass is designed to help support the roof to keep it from caving in.
Avoid using hot water on your windshield to melt ice in extremely cold weather. Why? The extreme change in the windshield’s surface temperature causes rapid expansion, which can create stress cracks in the glass.
We recognize that cracks in the side windows of your vehicle may not seem like a big deal since you primarily look out your front windshield. Since area law enforcement may not agree, we’re always ready to help you install the new auto glass you need.
Cracks should be fixed as quickly as possible or taped off with clear tape if they cannot be repaired. If rain or dirt gets into the crack, it is harder to seal shut.
Did you know there is such a thing as a wiperless windshield? These windshields use a mechanism other than wipers to remove rain and snow.
Did you know that using the squeegees provided by most gas stations can actually damage your windshield? Also, avoid using paper towels when possible because they can cause scratches.
If you’re considering selling your car, it’s a good idea to evaluate the condition of all the glass before you list it for sale. If your windows are full of scratches, dings, and cracks, you may find that it’s more difficult to find a buyer willing to meet your price.
If you spot what you believe is a stress crack in your windshield, arrange for replacement without delay. While they’re initially quite small, stress cracks typically start at the edge of the windshield, and they have a tendency to quickly grow bigger.
Auto glass installation is not a time consuming process. In most cases, a window can be replaced in 45-90 minutes, but it will take at least 24 hours to cure, in general, so plan time to leave your vehicle overnight.
Did you know a finished windshield is actually comprised of three layers? Every windshield made from laminated glass has a plastic inner layer between two glass outer layers.
The first intermittent automated wipers were invented in 1963 by Robert Kearns. Kearns was partially blind in one eye and his vision was bothered by the constant motion of the wiper blades. To keep his glass clear without the bothersome motion, he manufactured a design based on the human eye and intermittent wipers.
The word “glass” evolved from the Old English word, "glaes," which is related to an ancient word meaning to glint or glow. According to the Roman historian Pliny (23-79 AD), glass-making was discovered by accident around 5000 BC.
The first motorized windshield wiper was invented in 1917 by a Hawaiian dentist who created a motor for the wipers, making them the first electrical device in early cars after the electric starter was developed in 1912.
Did you know that prolonged direct exposure to the sun can decrease the life of your windshield? If possible, look for shaded parking spaces when you don't have access to a garage or carport.
Tempered glass windows will not prevent people from partially ejecting from their vehicles in rollovers or side collisions, causing some people to argue against putting this glass on side windows.
In general, chips in your windshield that are smaller than the size of a quarter can be repaired. Cracks smaller than three inches can be repaired as well, and sometimes even a crack as long as 12 inches can be repaired.
What’s a floater crack? It’s a crack that occurs in the middle portion of the windshield, and which starts and ends at least two inches from the windshield edge. With floater cracks, it’s important to deal with them right away, before they spread.
Stress cracks in glass can be caused by radical air pressure changes. While it’s not common, extreme wind pressures or shock waves from even a distant crash or explosion can produce sufficient force to create stress cracks.
We recognize that your windshield isn’t the only important piece of glass on your vehicle. Whether you’re having trouble with the glass on your headlights or your passenger windows, we’re always here to help you restore visibility.
A good time to clean windows is when pumping gas. Examine windows for any chips or cracks and remove any surface dirt.
Are you concerned that the damage to your windshield is going to cost more than your car budget can bear right now? Depending on the nature of the damage to your windshield, it may be possible to restore your auto glass to like new condition.
Unfortunately, windshield and window cracks in a vehicle are extremely insidious in nature. While they may start out harmless enough, they can quickly spread into a web of cracks across your glass, making it difficult to see what’s going on around you on the road.
By 1918, consumer demand for automobiles with glass windshields and side windows as standard equipment had become so strong, it affected the glass market. Costs tripled and glass supplies dwindled, creating temporary shortages.
If you want to avoid a complete windshield replacement, then it’s important to get your chip or crack repaired right away. The longer you let it go, the more time the crack will have to spread and the overall structure to weaken, making repair impossible.
Front and rear windshields are made from safety glass laminated with an invisible layer of vinyl. The vinyl is inserted between two layers of strengthened glass to prevent the windshields from shattering into dangerous, sharp shards.
There is no way to tell if your auto glass has been installed correctly without actually removing the glass to inspect it, so make sure you use a service with a solid reputation to avoid trouble down the road.
The first windshield repair system was introduced by 3M in 1971. It used ultra sound vibrations to clean the area, then a resin was injected with a syringe. The equipment was so large, that it required the bed of a pickup truck to move around.
Did you know that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) require auto glass adhesives to be strong enough to hold your car’s windshield in place under certain crash conditions?
The first patent for tempered glass appeared in 1900, but it took decades to find its way onto cars. It started being used for side windows and rear windows starting in the 1950s. Its characteristic shattering into small beads also gave it the name "safety glass."
Newer vehicles may require glass directly from the dealership. Older cars’ windshields can typically be repaired or replaced in more places since the glass has become more common.
