Our Story
When our mom was diagnosed with stage IV non-small cell adenocarcinoma in August 2016, we couldn’t understand how an active and healthy 53-year-old could have lung cancer metastasizing her brain and bones, all with no symptoms.
The oncologist described the disease as “sneaky” and “smart.” The symptoms are so mute it is nearly impossible to detect before the cancer spreads. Additionally, screening is not typically administered for non-smokers, leaving so many once healthy individuals in a similar situation our mom was in.
Further, even as a leading cause of death in both men and women in the US and most common cancer worldwide, we learned lung cancer does not have the funding it needs due to the negative stigma associated with the disease. So often assumed to be self-inflicted, researchers did not have donor support.
We desperately searched for a way to outwit the cancer so our mom and so many others could continue fighting. We wanted more data, more alternative treatments, and more clinical trials. We needed to reach new heights.
