National Runaway Safeline

The go-to resource for America’s runaway, homeless and at-risk youth and their families. Some people just need someone to talk to.

Youth and their family members contact us to work through problems and find local help from social service agencies and organizations. Others need help finding a shelter, food, medical assistance, or counseling. Some of the people we help are on the streets. Others are struggling with other issues and we work with them to identify options.

A new episode of "Let's Talk" is now available! We are excited to welcome National Runaway Safeline’s Director of Training, Sebastian Ramos, to the podcast! In this episode, we have conversation reflecting on missed opportunities for teaching and practice mindfulness during our school years. Sebastian shares his thoughts on ways mindfulness can be implemented in an educational setting today, and how talking about self-regulation at a young age teaches young people how to set healthy mental health boundaries.

We are thrilled to announce that National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM) has officially been rebranded as Youth Homelessness Outreach, Prevention, & Education Month, or Youth HOPE Month!

https://1800RUNAWAY.org/hope

Since 2001, November has been recognized as National Runaway Prevention Month following a White House Conference on Exploited and Runaway Children. The National Runaway Safeline (NRS) has partnered with hundreds of national, state, and local organizations to promote this vital public awareness campaign. Our goal has always been to highlight the often invisible and overlooked experiences of youth who have run away or experienced homelessness.

The landscape of youth homelessness and runaway issues has evolved significantly since NRPM’s inception. Our understanding of the needs and experiences of young people has deepened and broadened, leading to a more inclusive and comprehensive approach. Today, it is widely acknowledged that incorporating the perspectives of young people with lived experiences is critical in shaping effective support and interventions.

In the coming weeks, we will open registration for individuals and organizations to become official partners of Youth HOPE Month. As a valued past partner of NRPM and/or NRS, you can register as a partner for free NOW! By registering, you gain access to dozens of free resources, including toolkits, outreach materials, and social media graphics. You'll join a network of the most dedicated youth-facing service providers, community leaders, and supporters in the RHY community. Unlike NRPM, which required annual registration, you will only need to complete registration once, and you can easily make any necessary updates directly with NRS’s communications team. You or your organization will remain life-long partners in Youth HOPE Month unless you request removal from our database.

Cyberspace can be a dangerous playground for children who access it without proper safeguards.

Traffickers misuse them to expand their trafficking networks.

In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court has empowered cities to enforce anti-camping and vagrancy laws, marking a shift in the approach to homelessness. By a 6-3 vote in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, the court sided with enforcement-first strategies despite evidence favoring housing-first approaches. This decision reignites debates about the most effective ways to address homelessness, with advocates pointing to successful housing-first models in Houston and Atlanta. The ruling has profound implications, especially as the U.S. faces rising homelessness rates.

The Supreme Court's ruling on the City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson case makes it easier to fine, ticket, or even arrest people living unsheltered. This decision affects the over 4.2 million of youth and young adults who will experience homelessness this year.

If you care about protecting the dignity, rights, and safety of these individuals, now is the time to TAKE ACTION! Contact your elected officials and advocate for safe, secure, and affordable housing for all.

July is Disability Pride Month, celebrating the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. This groundbreaking civil rights law prohibits discrimination based on disability and has paved the way for greater inclusivity.

The National Runaway Safeline is proud to honor the achievements of individuals with both visible and invisible disabilities. Throughout the month, we will share life-changing resources and raise awareness about the gaps in services for youth experiencing homelessness.

In a decision that is a major setback for people experiencing homelessness, today has ruled 6-3 that a small Oregon town can arrest and ticket unhoused people for sleeping in public spaces, even when there are no adequate shelters options available. This ruling unfairly punishes unhoused people, including the millions of youth and young adults who are experiencing homelessness.

This decision will have a wide-reaching and profound impact on some of the most vulnerable populations in our communities. And we believe it to be a fundamental attack on the dignity and rights of those most in need.

Make your voice heard! Use this moment to contact your elected official and let’s work to ensure everyone has access to safe, secure, and affordable housing.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition’s advocacy toolkit includes resources that will be helpful to advocates, such as talking points and information on needed long-term solutions, including federal legislation.

Several factors contribute to the high risk for violence experienced by trans and GNC folks. Ending this epidemic requires addressing and eliminating anti-transgender stigma and discrimination across all facets of society and embracing people of all genders for who they are.

This report by HRC helps highlight this national emergency for the transgender community in the United States.
