Pivotal Moments - Picosa Music The final program in Picosa’s season brings together multiple works that represent pivotal moments in classical music history. Many consider Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun to be the moment when the seeds of atonality took root, which...

🌷Spring is almost here.... We are thrilled to present Appalachian Spring on February 29th. We thoroughly enjoyed performing it in January at Wheaton College Conservatory's Amerding Concert Hall.
🎼Aaron Copland is an American composer and wrote Appalachian Spring in 1944 for 13 instruments and then later for full orchestra. Picosa's composer-in-residence Jonathon Kirk transcribed Appalachian Spring especially for Picosa's instrumentation: flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano.
🎻After Jonathon finished the score it was sent to the Copland Estate for approval. They carefully went through the entire score, made one change, and gave us approval to perform this version!
🎟We hope you'll join us on February 29th at DePaul to hear it live!

Plea for Peace
Picosa performs the version for alto flute and string quartet (2 violins, viola, cello)
Tuesday, May 9th at 7pm at DePaul University's Holtschneider Performance Center

Augusta Read Thomas wrote Plea for Peace as a vocalise (without text) so that it could be versatile and performed by anyone, anywhere in the world, with any instruments or voices.
We find that it truly speaks to the human spirit and we know it will speak to you.
Fun Fact: Picosa's relationship with Gusty started in our first season when we approached her about a potentially new version of S**t. She was extremely receptive and we treasure the time we spent with her workshopping the piece. This new version of S**t is now published for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano.
Fun Fact No. 2: Picosa gave the premiere of the Alto Flute version of Plea for Peace!
During the pandemic Jennie interviewed Gusty about S**t, Plea for Peace and all of the amazing work she does for the music community.
Please take a listen to this video to learn more, and be sure to stay to the end to hear Plea for Peace!!

Mozart edition!
We are thrilled to be performing the Mozart Clarinet Quintet for clarinet and string quartet (2 violins, viola, cello) on May 9th at DePaul University.
Tickets: https://events.depaul.edu/event/picosa_presents_strings_may_2023
Lucky for clarinetists of the world, Mozart met Anton Stadler and was inspired to write music for clarinet. From this relationship we have the Clarinet Concerto K.622 and the Kegelsttatt Trio K. 498 in addition to the quintet.
The Clarinet Quintet K. 581 was written in 1789 for Stadler.
For those who like math that's 234 years ago.
In this piece you'll hear 4 movements that follow roughly these tempos/feels: fast, slow, dance-like, theme & variations.
The style/writing is very similar to the Clarinet Concerto with the 2nd movements (slow ones) being especially similar. Need something to listen to while you work today? Compare these two slow movements and let us know what you think!
Here is one of our favorite live recordings of the quintet: Sabine Meyer, Queen Goddess of the clarinet, and the Armida Quartet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTNbclgU3h4
What does the K. number mean anyway?
It's a numbering system created in 1862 by Ludwig von Köchel. Many tried to catalogue Mozart's works but Köchel was the one that succeeded in producing a comprehensive chronological listing. Many musicians refer to Mozart's music by the K number rather than the title. Proper clarinet nerds (clarinerds) often use K.622 as their usernames or license plates because that is the K number of the Clarinet Concerto.
Happy Listening!

Music is such a powerful force and this brand new work by Benjamin Horne is no different.
As humans many of us, if not all of us, have known loved ones who start to slip away due to memory loss and dementia. This piece takes us on a musical journey through that struggle.
We know that you'll be as touched as we are when you hear this piece. 💔
Benjamin Horne's Program Note:
I Remember You is a chamber work for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. The work is inspired by those who suffer from dementia and memory loss. As such, the work slowly unfolds revealing melody in the cello at the end that served as the basis for the work all along. The work begins in a foggy state like a brain not able to recognize even the familiar faces of one's life. Slowly, the music builds as the search begins to for old memories to return. Something clicks as the violin sings the
words "I remember you", first in consecutive half notes then later quarter
notes before the main theme is finally heard.
