The speed limit typically dictates what infrastructure and safety elements are possible. 🚧🚦
Essential safety items like raised crossings, bike lanes, or corner bulb-outs, can be ineligible on a street because drivers are currently going too fast. In effect, a 30 mph street is too dangerous to build safety infrastructure. Reducing the posted speed limit unlocks a variety of tools that can further increase safety on a street.
Streets designed for slower travel are not only safer, they are also much more livable. Better for business. Better for residents. Better for access to amenities. Better to support active transportation.

The real price of speeding? It's paid in lives, livelihoods, and community well-being. 😔 From shattered families to struggling neighborhoods, the toll is immense—and unfairly distributed, with Black communities on Chicago’s South and West Sides carrying the brunt of the burden.
Tell your alderperson: we need safer streets now! 🔗https://bit.ly/SlowDownCHI
When NYC lowered its speed limit from 30 mph to 25, this is what happened in the first year:
🚴🏽♂️Traffic fatalities fell by more than 22 percent
🚶🏾♀️Pedestrian fatalities fell by more than 25 percent
We are at a pivotal moment as Chicago lawmakers consider reducing the city's default urban speed limit from 30 to 25 mph.
Please tell your alderperson it's time to slow down.

Tell city council: A lower speed limit in Chicago will save lives - Active Transportation Alliance Last year, 115 lives were tragically cut short in Chicago due to fatal car crashes. Excessive speed was a critical factor in nearly half of those incidents. With higher speeds, the likelihood of severe injuries or fatalities skyrockets. Because of the role speed plays in car crashes, lowering the sp...
