Vision Therapy at Lyons Family Eye Care

Lyons Family Eye Care is a comprehensive eye care practice specializing in Vision Therapy and Pediat What Is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is a doctor-supervised, non-surgical and customized program of vision based therapeutic procedures designed to correct various vision problems and/or improve visual skills. Unlike eyeglasses and contact lenses, which simply compensate for vision problems, or eye surgery that alters the anatomy of the eye or surrounding muscles, vision therapy aims to “teach” the visual system to cor

My grandson, Dominic IV, was interviewed by WGN Evening News on the floor of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago .

He is an organizer for the youth volunteers at the DNC. Dominic also turned 18 today, so this election will be the his very first Federal Election and the first Presidential Election he will be able to vote in.

Dominic is a Mikva Challenge Organization recipient which allowed him to work as a paid intern in 30th Ward Alderwoman Ruth Cruz's office last summer. She then hired him to work in her office while still in high school. He is now their Policy Manager.

His next adventure will be as a freshman at the University of Illinois Chicago with a major in Political Science. He will also continue to work with Alderwoman Ruth Cruz and her staff as well.

His family is very proud of all his accomplishments.

The A, B, C's of going back to school...and why your child needs a full, comprehensive eye and vision examination.

The ABCs for Back to School:

Amblyopia: reduced vision in one or both eyes not due to a disease

Blur: fuzzy vision

Convergence Insufficiency: inability to coordinate the eyes to turn inward at a near object

Diplopia: seeing double

Eso/Exotropia: an inward/outward turning of an eye

Fatigue: visual tiredness due to near point stress

Ghosting: images that are almost but not quite superimposed so that one image appears to be a ghost slightly behind the other

Headache: head pain (in this case due to a visual problem)

Injury: an eye injury (fireworks, and other forms of trauma)

Jumpy (words): words jumping around on a page due to one of more binocular vision problems (eye coordination)

Keratoconus: a steeping of the eyes front surface (cornea)

Loss of place: losing your place while reading due to eye movement/coordination issues

Myopia: nearsightedness (the #1 cause of visual impairment in the world)

Nystagmus: usually an uncontrolled back and forth movement of the eyes

Oscillopsia: the world appears to move

Pain: eye pain can be due to many reasons from disease to focusing issues

Quotient (as in IQ Test): does not really measures your intelligence but rather how much you remember or have experienced

Re-reading: an inefficient way to read usually due to binocular vision problems

Saccades: a side to side movement of the eyes

Traumatic Brain Injury: a brain injury that results in numerous eye and vision problems.

Underlining (to keep place): using tractile feedback to maintain your place while reading

Vision (loss)

Watery eyes: often due to allergies

Xanthalesma: a yellow bump on or near your eyelid skin a cholesterol deposit. Usually seen in adults

Yearly (eye exams for routine care): There is seldom anything routine about a comprehensive eye examination when done appropriately. Such an exam should include an assessment of visual acuity, refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia), eye movement and coordination, focusing, eye health and more.

ZZZ (sleepy when reading): when your eyes do not work well together you tire easily.

August is Vision and Leaning Month. It's the month you need to get your kids ready for school. This includes a comprehensive eye and vision examination.

You should also know that problems with your child's 3D Vision can result in double vision, headaches, learning problems, attentional issues and more.... All of these can be be diagnosed and treated.

I worked with a fine group of doctors to put this information booklet together several years ago.... it's still relevant today.

A study of 666 strabismus surgeries noted that second surgeries were needed for a third (33%) of all cases.

The need for second and sometimes 3rd strabismus surgeries may be yet another reason to use Optometric Vision Therapy first as a treatment option.

Characteristics and Trends of Strabismus Surgeries at a Tertiary Hospital Over 2 Decades - What Can Be Learned for Years to Come? - PubMed The complexity of surgical techniques increased over time. Ethnic minorities were less prone to reoperations.

Experience with Strabologic Surgery on Pediatric Patients with Divergence Excess Exotropia - PubMed 07/12/2024

In a recent study looking at strabismus surgery, they found that

"...Six months after surgery, an objective angle of deviation within the limit ±5 degrees was achieved in 65% of patients from the first group and in 75% from the second group..."

Over the years, every time I have looked at the failure rate of strabismus surgery it is almost always between 20-30%.

This study is still (sadly) supports this unwanted outcome.

I suggest that you might want to try a non-surgical approach to improving strabismus, like Optometric Vision Therapy.

Ask us about this option.

5 Things to Know About Concussions 06/29/2024

This article tells you a great deal about concussions but leaves out all the eye and visual problems you may manifest.

If you have had a concussion you should have an assessment of visual acuity (reduced vision), ocular alignment in all positions of gaze (are your eyes straight), smooth pursuit (visual tracking of a moving object), saccades (visual fixation shifting between stationary targets) (eye movement), vestibulo-ocular reflex (maintaining image focus during movement), near point of convergence (focusing with both eyes at near and accommodation (focusing with one eye at near). All of these areas may be adversely affected after concussion.

Lyons Family Eye Care can assess these areas and if there are problems treat them as well.

5 Things to Know About Concussions Risks are higher for older adults, and the warning signs can be easy to overlook

Comparison of Reaction Time, Accuracy, and Practice Effects Between Gamers, Semi- Gamers, and Non- Gamers

Regular involvement in action video games resulted in improvement in attentional and cognitive skills in gamers, leading to better performance in reaction time, score, and accuracy rate compared to semi-gamers and non-gamers. The administration of practice over a short period of time drastically improved the performance of the non-gamers.

Myopia progression slowed by red light therapy.

"...Investigators from the Beijing Institute of Ophthalmology, and the Beijing Tongren Eye Center, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China, reported that daily use of 650-nm low-level red light for 1 year slowed the progression of spherical equivalent error (SER) and axial length (AL) without safety concerns.... The authors reported that the mean change in SER was almost 1 diopter less [myopia],...."

It should be noted that the use of therapeutic light has been utilized by optometrists for decades. Go to the College of Optometrists in Vision Development, Optometric Extension Program Foundation and/or the College of Syntonic Optometry for additional information.

Please remember that you should always consult with your Doctor of Optometry before starting any therapy. Also, as with many promising new therapies, additional research is often needed.

A Novel Multi-Ingredient Supplement Reduces Inflammation of the Eye and Improves Production and Quality of Tears in Humans - PubMed 05/02/2024

Note as far as I can tell there are no OTC supplements combinations available just yet. However, I'm pretty sure one will be on the shelves soon.

Bausch & Lomb has not release the exact formulation. So we don't know what mix of these supplements is the best.

Dr. Dominick M Maino, a longtime Northwest side resident, provided the 30th Ward with a limited number of these special eclipse viewing glasses. The only safe way to view an eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as these glasses.

If you normally wear eyeglasses, wear your eclipse glasses over them, or hold your handheld viewer in front of them. It’s important to note that eclipse glasses are NOT regular sunglasses – regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not safe for viewing the sun.
