The answer to our latest trivia question is... papillae! ๐ฑโจ
Did you guess correctly?
Here are some fun facts about cat tongues:
1. Rough Texture: Cat tongues are covered with tiny, hook-shaped structures called papillae, which help them groom their fur and scrape meat off bones.
2. Tasty Treats: The papillae also help cats enjoy their food by giving them a better grip on it, which is especially useful for their meat-based diet.
3. Unique Patterns: Each catโs tongue has a unique pattern of papillae, much like a human fingerprint!

Did you know drop-off outpatient abdominal ultrasound services are available to patients referred to us by primary care and specialty veterinarians?

Outpatient ultrasounds are available as a drop-off appointment on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. A radiology technician will contact you to arrange for pick-up after the ultrasound is complete.
If you do not have a veterinarian, please schedule your petโs ultrasound with internal medicine, or walk in to the emergency room.

The neurological exam tells us the location of disease and allows us to focus our diagnostic testing to a specific area of the nervous system.
Mental Status:
- Observation in the exam room provides insight into your pet's level of consciousness.
- A fully alert pet should interact normally.
-Altered consciousness (e.g., dullness, disorientation) may indicate brain or brainstem disease but could also result from systemic illness.
Gait & Posture
- The neurologist observes your pet's walking and posture, often in a hallway or outdoors.
- Abnormalities like weakness or incoordination may suggest neurological disease.
- Gait analysis helps pinpoint the disease location (spinal cord, brain, or peripheral nerves).
Cranial Nerve Examination
- The neurologist tests the 12 pairs of cranial nerves that control head structures.
- These tests help locate the disease in specific brain areas.
Postural Reactions
- Tests assess your pet's awareness of limb positioning.
- Abnormal responses can indicate disease in specific spinal cord or brain areas.
Spinal Reflexes
- Reflexes such as the patellar reflex (knee jerk) and withdrawal reflex are tested.
- These tests identify potential spinal cord or nerve diseases.
Pain Response
- The neurologist assesses pain by pressing on the head, neck, and back.
- Obvious pain signs help diagnose issues, while lack of pain can indicate certain diseases.
- Deep pain response testing is crucial for prognosis in spinal cord injuries.
We're dedicated to keeping your pets happy and healthy.
If your pet is facing a health emergency, our team is equipped to provide quick and efficient treatment. Don't waitโbring your pet in for the 24/7 care they deserve.

With summer weather upon us, itโs important to keep your pet well-hydrated! Generally, your pet should drink about one ounce of water for each pound of body weight. That may need to increase by 3-4x depending on their exposure to heat, activity levels, and diet.
Encourage your pet to drink more water by:
๐ง Always supplying fresh water
๐ง Clean the water bowl daily
๐ง For pets that prefer running water, try a pet fountain
๐ง Add wet food or more raw fruits and vegetables to their diet (just double-check that they are safe for your pet to consume)
Your pet may be dehydrated if theyโre experiencing loss of appetite, reduced energy, lethargy, panting, dry eyes, nose, or gums, or loss of skin elasticity.
