Those of us who have seen the faces of the people who come to our southern border know that the fear that drives this belief is unfounded. We know because our hearts believe our eyes, not the voices of reaction and, frankly, cynical misdirection that cry to us about wolves at our door. There are wolves, all right, but they are the ones driving people from their homes to seek asylum, and they are the ones behind us that smugly wink to one another as they howl of chaos at the border.

Quienes hemos visto los rostros de las personas que llegan a nuestra frontera sur sabemos que el miedo que impulsa esta creencia es infundado. Lo sabemos porque nuestros corazones creen en nuestros ojos, no en las voces de reacción y, francamente, desorientación cínica que nos gritan que hay lobos a nuestra puerta. Hay lobos, está bien, pero son ellos los que expulsan a la gente de sus hogares para buscar asilo, y son los que detrás de nosotros se guiñan el ojo con aire de

The War of Conquest Continues

Editor’s note: Members of the Witness at the Border group and others are traveling the length of the US-Mexico border from Texas to California Dec. 3-18, 2022, to call attention to the plight of migrants and refugees and the work of organizations along the border. Our eyes are seeing more things than our hearts and minds can absorb. I find myself perched in an unfamiliar place, on the edge of tears. This trip along the border is no easy trek, even for one hovering above the tragedy such as myself, with a home to go back to, with a life free of privation.

La guerra de conquista continúa

Nuestros ojos ven más cosas de las que nuestro corazón y nuestra mente pueden absorber. Me encuentro encaramado en un lugar desconocido, al borde de las lágrimas. Este viaje a lo largo de la frontera no es un camino fácil, ni siquiera para alguien que, como yo, se cierne sobre la tragedia, con un hogar al que regresar, con una vida libre de privaciones.
