It’s so interesting to see how Assateague and the channels have changed over the years.

Join us as we continue our countdown to the 99th Annual Chincoteague Pony Swim and Auction!

The Beach Walk is a mystical event! There is something about the sound of waves crashing on shore, a salty breeze blowing, and Saltwater Cowboys on horseback leading the north herd Chincoteague ponies down the beach through a morning mist that is burning off from the rising sun. It is just that special!

On Monday, the north herd ponies will leave the northern corral on Assateague Island at 6am, led by the Saltwater Cowboys. They will cross the island and then walk down the beach to the delight of onlookers with a destination of the south herd corral. Awaiting their arrival will be the south herd ponies, which arrived in the corral on Saturday.

Attendees can bike or drive over to the Beach Walk, with the vehicular gate on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge opening at 5am. Park at the Wildlife Loop and walk or bike out to Swan Cove Trail for a quieter experience or at the beach lots to find your favorite spot north of the parking area. Parking will fill up, so plan appropriately. The ponies usually arrive at the beach parking lot around 7am.

After the walk is over, many attendees head back to their accommodation for a morning nap or to eat breakfast, but it is also an extremely pleasant time to be at the beach. Pack a chair and cooler with your breakfast and enjoy the morning with your toes in the sand at the Assateague Island National Seashore.

The ponies will be in the southern corral until Wednesday morning, so there is plenty of time to see the herd, pick out your favorite foal, and see vet checks take place on Tuesday. At that time, each pony will get a thorough exam by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company’s dedicated veterinary staff to make sure it is safe for them to make the swim and buyback ponies will be chosen. Any ponies not cleared to swim due to age, pregnancy, injury, etc. will be trailered over to the carnival grounds.

This weekend may be waterlogged, but the Museum of Chincoteague always has events on the calendar!
Come on down for a fall weekend and attend a great activity!

The best part of visiting in the fall is driving to the end of Assateague! The ‘hook’ doesn’t open until the end of August due to nesting birds. 🐤 the beach is empty, and kids can find amazing shells!

Today I ventured down to the "crook of the hook" - as I like to call it. The southern portion of Assateague opened up a couple weeks ago, but the Coast Guard Station isn't accessible until the 15th. It's kind of become a tradition for me to walk there when it opens in September, and then again when it closes 6 months later for migratory birds/nesting in March.

Such a magnificent specimen of ever-changing barrier island. These old bones have been a constant for as long as I can remember, though. I brought along an Erick Sahler Serigraphs Co. postcard that I snagged at Sundial Books and snapped a photo. His prints are always so on point!

We know it's still late summer, and we haven't even started thinking about holidays, but-
The Chincoteague Christmas Parade is scheduled for December 2, 2023! Come on down to K&S for the weekend, watch the parade- and then you can walk through Christmas Manor light display RIGHT NEXT DOOR!
If that doesn't get you into the Christmas spirit- we don't know what will!

What an amazing night for a parade! The weather cooperated and Chincoteague was definitely in the holiday spirit to celebrate 'Christmas in Toyland'! Thank you to all of our partners and volunteers that help make the parade a wonderful event each year...and our entries...you were all amazing!

Today starts the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance annual Plein Air event. Artists from all over the country will paint outdoor scenes throughout the week in preparation for next Saturday's show and sale. We have added a few more events to our schedule for next week. Shipwreck archaeologist Brendon Burke will be joining us this fall for a presentation. He had intended to be here next week, but is busy with a brand new shipwreck discovery! More news to follow on that later.
