Thirty years ago, shortly after our President Bruce Himes came to work for Western Water Works, he recognized the need to obtain the right people to grow the business.

Not knowing where to start, Bruce decided to attend a local job fair for graduating high school Seniors in the El Monte School District. After six long hours, he left the job fair that day feeling like it was a complete waste of time. He had only spoken to one kid who seemed even remotely interested.

That “kid” was Ruben Pena. The week after graduation Ruben went to our South El Monte branch, knocked on the front door and said, “I need a job”. Thirty years later Ruben has become one of our top performing Directors of Sales.

We didn’t know what we were doing at the time when it came to obtaining, training, and retaining the right people. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. We definitely got lucky when we found Ruben Pena. Ruben’s career path may have been the framework for what is today called our STEPs training program.
