FUN FACT - Complementary Colors
Did you know that complementary colors can make each other appear more vibrant when placed side by side? This optical effect is due to the way our eyes perceive color. When you look at one color for an extended period, your eyes become fatigued and start to see its complementary color as an afterimage. This phenomenon is called "simultaneous contrast."

For example, if you stare at a red dot for a while and then look at a white surface, you'll see a green afterimage. This is because red and green are complementary colors. Artists can use this optical trick to make colors in their paintings appear more intense and lively.

Examples of Complementary Colors on the Color Wheel and how you can use them.
I hope you will give these a try!

Complementary colors are pairs of colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. These color pairs create a beautiful contrast and vibrant look when placed next to each other. Here are some examples: Make sure to be careful of mixing them together, or they can turn dark, dull and shadowy.

1. Red and Green Perfect for poppies, and roses, otherwise to Christmasy for me!
- Red: A primary color.
- Green: A secondary color made by mixing blue and yellow.

2. Blue and Orange
- Blue: A primary color.
- Orange: A secondary color made by mixing red and yellow.

3. Yellow and Purple One of my favorite color combinations~
- Yellow: A primary color.
- Purple: A secondary color made by mixing blue and red.

4. Yellow-Orange and Blue-Purple
- Yellow-Orange: A tertiary color made by mixing yellow and orange.
- Blue-Purple (Indigo): A tertiary color made by mixing blue and purple.

5. Red-Orange and Blue-Green
- Red-Orange: A tertiary color made by mixing red and orange.
- Blue-Green (a.k.a. Teal): A tertiary color made by mixing blue and green.

6. Red-Purple and Yellow-Green
- Red-Purple (Magenta): A tertiary color made by mixing red and purple.
- Yellow-Green A tertiary color made by mixing yellow and green.

How I Use Complementary Colors in Your Watercolor Paintings

1. High Contrast: Use complementary colors to create powerful contrasts in your floral paintings. Paint a vibrant yellow sunflower with a purple background to make the flower pop. Use wet in wet for the background, salt, saran wrap! Get creative

2. Shadowing and Depth: Use the complementary color of your main hue for shadows to create depth Example, , if you’re painting a red rose, use green for the shadows to add dimension. I always add just a touch of my flower color into my leaves as well, it create a beautiful cohesiveness between elements.

3. Balancing Color: Balance your composition by placing complementary colors next to each other. This can draw attention to the focal points and create visual impact and interest.

Practice Exercise -
Create a small floral painting using complementary colors.

1. Choose a Flower: Select a flower to paint, such as a Poppy.
2. Select Complementary Colors: Decide on the color scheme. If you choose a red flower, use green for leaves and background elements.
3. Sketch Your Composition: Lightly sketch the flower and supporting elements.
4. Paint the Main Elements: Start with your main color example, red for the flower
5. Add Complementary Details: Use the complementary color example, green for leaves, stems, and background to create contrast and interest.
6.Always Step back and assess your work. Adjust the balance and harmony as needed. Its amazing how stepping away for an hour gives you fresh eyes!

“Taken from various notes I’ve taken over years”

By developing a familiarity and confidence with complementary colors, you can bring more vibrancy and balance to your watercolor floral paintings. Happy painting! 🌸🎨

Lesson #9 Watercolor Composition simplified 11/04/2023

Saturday’s tip for the week..
This is my process I hope it helps!

Creating a Cohesive Watercolor Floral Composition: A Step-by-Step Guide

Introduction:

Capturing the delicate essence of florals with watercolor can be both rewarding and challenging. The key to a successful composition lies in understanding and applying the fundamental rules of composition. This guide will help you create a watercolor floral piece that is harmonious and balanced, with a focus on the strategic placement of leaves and floral elements.

Materials Needed:

- Watercolor paper (300gsm, cold-pressed is ideal) Artisto pads https://amzn.to/3N6RcaP
Artisto 9x12 https://amzn.to/3Ep3JAY
- Watercolor paints https://amzn.to/3s1LAWO
- Various sizes of round watercolor brushes my fave Princeton Velvetouch Filbert #8 Round brush: https://amzn.to/3LwZYy6

- Two jars of water for rinsing and mixing
- Pencil and eraser for sketching
- Paper towels for blotting
- Masking tape and a board to secure the paper
- A mixing palette

Step 1: visualize and find inspo Your Composition

- Find inspiration: Look for floral arrangements that create a balance between complexity and simplicity.
- Color palette selection: Choose a set of colors that work in harmony.
- Preliminary sketching: Lightly sketch your composition using the rule of thirds to place your focal flowers.

Step 2: Preparing Your Workspace

- Secure the paper: Use masking tape to fix the paper to your board. This keeps the paper flat as you paint. (If working wet in wet) or use a black of paper MEEDEN Direct Link - (For outside of US) Https://bityl.co/KHIO

Step 3: starting with a light Underpainting wash

- Begin with the background: Apply a light wash to define the spaces around your focal points.
- Apply the lightest tones: Paint the lightest parts of your main flowers with a loose wash.

Step 4: designing and laying out Floral Elements

- Define your focal points: Use the Rule of thirds https://youtu.be/RQ4jPP55V08?si=9D9Rx-vz5ni9wIjm to place your main flowers in a way that leads the eye through the composition.
- Apply the 'big to small' rule: Paint the larger elements first and progressively move to the smaller ones.

Step 5: Adding in Foliage and Fillers

- Observe natural patterns: Arrange leaves and filler elements like buds, ferns, berries, to fill gaps and balance the composition.
- Apply the rule of odds: Odd numbers of elements are more pleasing to the eye, so try to group leaves and smaller flowers in threes or fives.

Step 6: Layering for Depth and Dimension

- Wait for the first layers to dry.
- Add mid value shades, then darkest value shades, for depth, using the rules of contrast to draw attention to your focal points and create shadows and depth.

Step 7: Detailing for interest

- Once your layers are dry, add fine details such as veins in the leaves and textures in the petals,.
- Use directional brush strokes to guide the viewer’s eye towards the center of interest, use the direction
Your flowers are open and facing, this leads your viewers eye around your painting.

Step 8: Refining Learn to see the negative space around your painting as an element in your painting as well.

- Use negative space effectively: Ensure that the spaces between your elements help to define them.
- Balance your elements: Adjust the weight of colors and shapes across your paper, distributing colors to lead your eye not create a stopping point.

Step 9: Adding Final Touches

- Review and adjust contrast (light and dark values or hard and soft lines) , and details.
- Enhance highlights and shadows to make your composition pop.

Step 10: Unveiling Your Masterpiece

- Carefully remove the masking tape to reveal clean edges.
- Sign your work and step back to enjoy the result of your effort.

I hope this is helpful

Laying out a cohesive watercolor floral composition takes thought and care and can be intimidating for the beginner. By applying composition rules like the rule of third, and the rule of odds, your arrangement will be naturally pleasing to the eye.

Remember to step back periodically to view your work as a whole, ensuring each element contributes to a balanced and beautiful piece.

Lesson #9 Watercolor Composition simplified This technique has been one I have carried with me since school~ It just stuck and made composition so easy. This is my simplification of this principle. Ge...

🎨 Join Our November 21st Watercolor Class - Painting the Beautiful Tiger Lily! 🌸 Only one class this month~

Hi, Beautiful Artists!

I'm happy to finally announce our upcoming watercolor class on November 14th, where we'll be playing with the mesmerizing world of the tiger lily. But before we get started, here are a few fun facts about this stunning flower:

1. The tiger lily (Lilium lancifolium) is known for its vibrant orange color and unique spotted petals.
2. In Chinese culture, it symbolizes wealth, positivity, and good luck.
3. These flowers can grow up to three feet tall, making them a striking addition to any garden.

Now, back to our class! I can't contain my excitement to paint this beautiful plant with all of you. We'll explore its intricate details and vibrant hues together.
4. Did you know they have three sepals, three petals and together they are referred to as 6 tepals! (more on that later)

Here's what you need to know:
- Date: November 14th
- Time: Typically from 9:30 am PDT to 11:00 am PDT, but I'll do my best to accommodate everyone's time zones.

- Drawing available now once you register
- Next week, I'll email your color palettes, suggested supplies, and brushstrokes.
- A few days before the class, you'll receive your personal Zoom link.

** Please ensure you can print the download worksheets and trace your Tiger Lily onto your watercolor paper (you can hold your drawing up to a sunny window with your watercolor paper on top and trace quite easily).
** Also make sure you are familiar with using Zoom and have an account. (Its very easy, I promise)

I aim to keep our class size small, typically around 5-6 students, so we can engage, answer questions, and work together closely.
