Make sure you are ready for the warmer weather call (850)258-4920 to schedule your Spring A/C Maintenance!!!
The reason for Emergency heat is to keep the unit from running in defrost the majority of the time when the outside temperature is below the design temp of the system. Design temperature varies from unit to unit, most low end equipment is rated at 40deg outside temp with midgrade equipment around 20deg and high end equipment 5deg/-15deg ratings. When a system goes into defrost it will switch to AC mode as well as burning your emergency heat in default heat setting. To keep this from happening, when the temp outside is below your units design temperature it is recommended to use emergency heat so you are not wasting energy.
Important Tip!!!!!! Tonight starts a bitter cold spell like we've not seen in our lifetime. It will last for days, please test your heat, including emergency heat, to be sure it working properly. Make sure and set your heat-pump systems on emergency heat before going to sleep tonight. This will keep your system from running in defrost most of the night. This might also be necessary during the daytime hours in some areas of the coastline.
If you don't know what the defrost cycle is, read on! Once the outdoor units coil drops below 32 degrees, the unit automatically goes into defrost sending the system into cool mode. Most units will also shut off the outdoor fan during this as well. If your unit is in regular heat mode and equipped with emergency heat strips, they will also be energize at this point, so now you are running your elements while in the cooling mode which is burning roughly 3.3 kw/hr more than emergency heat all while cooling the house back down. This happens an awful lot once the temperatures drop as low as they will be in the panhandle tonight.
