Wow, what a fun Derby Day at Stonegate Farm! Wart was tense and green but raring to jump the jumps. Pilot off-course in the Handy round; Wart had learned a lot by then; we had some good moments throughout the courses. So proud of both of us to have accomplished and survived this experience. Thanks to Tracy and Corey Grandstrand, Missy Fedor, and all the Stonegate Farm staff for putting on a wonderful schooling opportunity. Thanks to Always Chestnut Photography for the action pic.
Good Intentions in the form of courses set. Two fives, a four and a six; lots of roll-back options, a few bending and broken line options. Trainers, send your students up for a clinic π!?!
What a beautiful day Friday at RPHSA's Stonegate Farm schooling show with Wart, husband and grand daughter. Wart is starting to understand what he's at a show for. He got more comfortable hanging out at the back gate. I am so proud of his progress! It certainly has been on his terms. We're looking forward to the next learning opportunity.
Planting complete; everything in by Memorial Day weekend. Weeding, cultivating, planting, watering. These gardens provide enough food to feed four humans and two dogs for a year or more; carrot and apple treats for the horses. Cost effective if one doesn't count Kathy's labor (hardest working girl for no money ever invented). Supervised by Grizzly (7) and Lucy (10).
Thanks to Julie Harter and Bit 'N Bridle Stables in Onalaska for putting on a very nice show May 18. Penny and the BoyZ went to her first show since 2021 and their very first show ever. We did our best and learned a lot from our green mistakes. The BoyZ and Penny made new friends; Kathy renewed old acquaintances. Video by BoyZ1.
Waste Not, Want Not. Lilac cuttings culled from neighbor's and our plants planted roadside. Time will tell if they make it. Lilacs below started out the same way. Pray for rain and hope for the best.
14 years of neglect was enough. Pruning took days. Then they bloomed and made it all worth it.
The good, bad and the ugly of our first show of the season ended with an OK courtesy round where Wart finally got "it" a little more together; finally coming forward into my hand! He is a very challenging horse to ride yet he tries so hard. With four out of the last five years "off" for one issue or another, I'm finally getting more time in on the horses. One round at a time! Thanks to all at Carriage House who put on a wonderful show at a beautiful venue.
Hoofprints in February? Who'dathunkit?
Done! Congratulations to the new lot owners. There are some very nice homes built already. Thank you, Dana Yoder, for your patience and perseverance over the last three years.
Thanks to Julie Harter of Bit N Bridle Stables in Onalaska for inviting me to "sub" to teach a clinic at her barn December 16. It was the best Christmas present ever to teach again. Everyone and her horse made some great changes! I think a good time was had by all. π
Wart's last ride in the outdoor while the weather is unseasonably warm. Party enjoying the waning shafts of sunlight. Blurred Penny cantering indoors. House construction across the street a training and concentration challenge. The boys are more comfortable around the horses! So proud of what they've learned to do! No showing this year. Decided to expose horses to everything around the property now that the entire 20 acres is rideable. We'll see what 2024 brings; and if we can drive there in our diesel truck and trailer?!?! Warm and wonderful Holiday wishes to all; may peace be in your hearts and minds.
Lucky for us, fall has decided to give us more time to "get it all done" before the snow flies. Compost on my paddocks, straw mulch on the gardens, cats ensconced in the tack room. Ready, but never ready for the cold that will come. The best part of this fall preparation is lifting the straw off the gardens in the spring and seeing all the perennials already emerging. Hope springs eternal!
Fall is here. Long-lining Penny on our trails through the woods. Seven turkeys, four squirrels, a doe and her two fawns and, of course, the "thirty point buck" (not!). π¦
Car Club Meeting hosted by Spencer. A grand time was had by all. The boys and Spencer's fleet of Ford trucks.
The "new" flower garden. Created by Spencer, Painted by Kathy; moved by all. No weeding!
One of our grandchildren visited recently. It was pleasant as she did not have a phone! She enjoyed the animals. Favorite cat? Stormy. Favorite dog? Grizzly. Favorite horse? Wart. Favorite fly? A DEAD one!
One of our world's problems....
Strawberries come in June, at least twice. Enough for 2 Strawberry/Rhubarb pies, as well, yum!
Spencer's 1930's-1940's era PURE Oil
sign addition to his Man Castle Antiques Museum and his 1948 Ford Truck. Oldies, but Goodies!
Well, I've finally crossed back over to the horse girl side of life after a long absence (never from chores, of course!) due to some type of illness/injury or another. My barn is cleaner than my house, and I DON'T CARE (much...)π₯Ή!
Thrilling update at Amber Farm! Spencer and I have finally completed our outdoor arena. 2" of Blue Manufactured Sand on top of limestone screenings on top of base coarse. Kathy rode for the first time Saturday and it feels great! The horses were anxious to get out on the footing, too, but Kathy had to remind them that the arena is no longer a turnout but a work space. ππΊπΈπ
Blast from past; April 2012. Bernadette (born 4/8/12 Bryere Zen by Baron von Gogh out of GrandZen) and Teager, the cat. Teager will be 17 years old this year! He was at the bottom of my sleeping bag for the birth of all of these horses. BZ is with a great owner in PA. Rory (legs) (Better Zen That by Baron von Gogh out of That's a Zen xx) is with another great owner in AZ. GrandZen (by Grandom out of That's a Zen xx) is still in CA, as far as I know. I'm getting ready to breed Fierce Independent xx (by Fierce Wind out of Fearless Bay) to Conteros (by Contender out of Rawiena). So, my hopes are high for another great quality warmblood foal. I'm not as excited to sleep in my tack room next March and April. However, like the rest of us crazy horse people, I will do what I need to do!
Good Bye Winter! One of us will miss the snow.

Heavy blankets are laundered and stored for the season, hopefully!?! Mediums and the mud for now. Rehabilitation has gone very well over the winter for all. Every day a new adventure; perpetual works in progress. Back in the tack finally, will we be ready in time?
The horses are shedding!
