We were so excited to receive this information on the effect of exposure to drugs that we deal with in our community. It is really eye opening what this exposure can do to children and their brains.
Understanding Drug Exposure in Kids & Teens Dr. Mary Jo Hedrick, Ph.D., Developmental Psychologist, presented this training on May 14, 2024 at Belmont Christian Church in Christiansburg, VA.
Children in foster care don't want to be known just as "foster kids." They just want to be treated as the children they are. This is where normalcy comes into play. Put simply, normalcy allows children and youth to live regular lives like their peers who are not in foster care. Youth can play sports, go to friends' houses, have jobs, etc. Children in foster care should be able to grow up as normally as possible. It's been a busy December for MCDSS Foster Care from shopping, wrapping, and delivering gifts to helping pass out cookies with Santa the last two days.
Our foster care unit received donations for Santa's Village, which provided 17 children with Christmas. MCDSS recieved donations from Rorrer Well Drilling, Fenton Pump Service, Dirt Movers Excavating, Jones and Son Excavating, David Stephens Plumbing, Foresight Design Services, Brooks Title and Escrow, Lantern Ridge Apartments, Shelor Motor Mile - Toyota, Managed Growth Inc., Sarah Tilson-Miano - State Farm Insurance, The Branded Blonde, and a few individuals. We can't express how thankful we are for the community coming together and making this possible for our kiddos! YOU ALL ARE ROCKSTARS!!
MCDSS also received cookie donations for a community Cookies with Santa event that was held at the following locations, Meadowbrook Library of Shawsville, Bluff Apartments of Christiansburg, Lantern Ridge Apartments of Blacksburg, and Warm Hearth Village. All of which were wonderful hosts and went above and beyond. There were over 500 cookies donated between Food Lion - Roanoke Street, Food Lion - North Franklin, Kroger - North Franklin, Walmart - North Franklin, Kroger - South Main, and Kroger - UCB. Again, we can't thank these partners enough either. The joy that Santa and the cookies bought to all of these locations was incredible. We were able to share lots of love and laughs over the last two days with our community as well as each other.
Again, thank you to each and every community partner and individual who helped put both of these special events on with us. We look forward to the many more holidays to come. 🎅🎄🎁❄️

Montgomery Co. social workers filling in for another county Keeping social workers is a challenge across Virginia. There’s a lot of turnover at many department of social services offices.
In Virginia, there are over 1,500 children in foster care and more than 700 who have the goal of adoption. Have you wondered what the process of adopting a child is like? The first step to giving a child a permanent, loving home is to fill out an application declaring your desire to adopt a child. For all types of adoption, a home study is then required to help prepare the individual or family for parenting by adoption. Call 1-800-DO-ADOPT or visit AdoptVA.com to get started.
With our offices closed on Friday in observance of Veterans Day, please remember that Monday, November 13 will be the last day to apply for fuel assistance!
Fuel assistance includes home heating costs as well as furnace re-starts, late charges, delivery charges, installation charges, and connection or re-connection fees. Don't miss your chance to offset heating costs as the fickle Virginia weather gets colder. Find your application options and learn more at https://www.dss.virginia.gov/benefit/ea/index.cgi.
