Our heartfelt condolences to the family of firefighter/husband/father Jeremy Compton. As we watched the fire department's processional today and saw all the people lining the streets to show their respect, we saw the support of our community to one of our fallen. DWR will be hosting the following Free Fishing Days events. Agency staff and volunteers will be on site with rods & reels, terminal tackle, and bait, ready to instruct you on how to fish. Events are free and no registration is required. If you’re interested in learning how to fish you can attend an event with family and friends at one of the following locations:
Saturday, June 8, 2024
Southwest Virginia: Hungry Mother State Park (Marion) – 8:00 am – 3:00 pm (2854 Park Blvd, Marion, VA 24354)
Sunday, June 9, 2024
Eastern Virginia: Williams Wharf Landing (Mathews County) – 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm (1039 Williams Wharf Road, Mathews, VA)
The Mathews Land Conservancy, in partnership with DWR, VIMS, Virginia Cooperative Extension, YMCA of Virginia Peninsulas, Rotary Club of Mathews, Kiwanis of Mathews, VMRC, and USCG Auxiliary, is pleased to offer a fun, informative program on Sunday 6/9/24, from 1–4pm, allowing community members to experience the best of our waterfront community. Several interactive learning stations are scheduled, including saltwater fishing, seining, touch tanks, bay ecology, & boater safety. The free event is held at 1039 Williams Wharf Road in Mathews VA, at the historic Williams Wharf Landing. Go to mathewslandconservancy.org for more information.
No fishing license of any kind will be required for recreational rod and reel fishing during free fishing days. Also during that time facilities use permits will also not be required. To increase angling opportunities, DWR has removed the restriction to fishing designated stocked trout waters for free fishing weekend. This will open over 2,900 miles of trout streams, in addition to numerous ponds, small lakes and reservoirs. Virginia’s diversified trout habitat offers a wide range of trout fishing prospects. All fishing regulations including size, season, catch limits, and gear restrictions will remain in effect.
DWR fee fishing areas still require a fee for Free Fishing Days weekend.
Soon it will be too hot for your air conditioner to go out! Don't put off a tuneup.

Attention Briggs and Stratton Generator owners! April 1st is almost here. See below for "exercise" run times for your generator!
To ensure it’s running properly, you may occasionally hear your generator “exercise." This process involves the generator automatically starting up for a short period of time on a preset frequency (Briggs & Stratton offers options for 16 seconds, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and 20 minutes exercise times for weekly, monthly, or when indicated). This is a self-diagnostic process that ensures the generator can start up and run properly when needed.
As spring and fall begin, you might notice that your generator has an extra long exercise. Some Briggs & Stratton home generators are set to run for 45 minutes every April 1 and September 1 for burn off. These long exercise modes allow the generator to burn off any water that may have accumulated in the engine crankcase throughout the year. This burn off helps your generator run more smoothly and lets your dealer know that your unit is working properly. These long exercise cycles act as a good maintenance routine and are good for your generator's overall health.
We have made sure that this longer run time is still giving you the most efficient generator. We have set your generator to run initially for 6 seconds at a normal speed and then drop the engine speed to a lower speed for the remainder of the exercise cycle. Running at a lower engine speed is more efficient, resulting in a quieter operation.
Great Gospel singing is coming to our area soon! Mark your calendars for April, July and October to go see some great Southern Gospel groups. Contact Lonna to get your tickets ahead or get them at the door. See you there!

Winter is here with a vengeance! Here are some tips for your heating system.
• DO HEAT PUMPS WORK IN COLD WEATHER?
• Yes, heat pumps can work in cold weather. Modern heat pumps are designed to operate efficiently in temperatures as low as -15°C, and some models can work in even colder temperatures. In some regions, homeowners may have the option of installing a geothermal heat pump, which uses thermal energy from underground instead of the air, which is more efficient in colder temperatures.
• HOW DOES A HEAT PUMP WORK?
• A heat pump works by transferring heat from one area to another. In the winter, it extracts heat from the outdoor air and transfers it inside your home. In the summer, it works in reverse, extracting heat from inside your home and transferring it outside. Heat pumps move thermal energy in and out by using a refrigerant chemical in a coil system, which absorbs and releases heat as it evaporates and condenses.
• HOW DOES A HEAT PUMP WORK IN THE WINTER?
• In the winter, a heat pump uses a reversing valve to switch the flow of refrigerant, allowing it to extract heat from the outside air and transfer it inside. This process is less efficient at lower temperatures, but modern heat pumps are designed to operate effectively in cold weather.
• SHOULD HEAT PUMPS BE RUN CONSTANTLY IN THE WINTER?
• No, heat pumps do not need to run constantly in the winter. Most heat pumps are designed to cycle on and off as needed to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. That said, if it is very cold outside, it may need to run continuously at times to maintain warmth in your home.
• DO HEAT PUMPS FREEZE UP IN WINTER?
• Heat pumps can freeze up in cold weather, especially if they are not properly maintained. However, most modern heat pumps have built-in defrost cycles to prevent this from happening. If you see steam rising from your heat pump, this is the defrost cycle “melting” off the frost.
• HOW DO I DEFROST MY HEAT PUMP?
• If you notice ice buildup on your heat pump in the winter, it’s best to make sure it is functioning properly. Modern heat pumps should have a built-in defrost cycle that automatically activates to thaw the ice. If not, you can manually defrost your heat pump by turning it off (at the breaker) and using a hose or warm water to melt the ice. Never use hot water. Make sure runoff or water or snow from the roof or gutters are not running onto your heat pump.
• If you have a built-in defrost system that is not working, be sure to call your local HVAC technician to assess and fix the problem.
• WHAT IS THE OPTIMAL TEMPERATURE RANGE FOR A HEAT PUMP IN THE WINTER?
• Air-source heat pumps have a minimum operating temperature below which they can no longer operate efficiently or at all. This optimal temperature range is typically around -5°C to -15°C, with some new models operating at as low as -25°C.
• When temperatures drop below this range, it is best to use a backup or supplemental heating system to keep your home warm.
• HOW DO I MAINTAIN MY HEAT PUMP DURING THE WINTER?
• To maintain your heat pump during the winter, you should keep it clear of snow and ice, change the air filter regularly, and schedule annual maintenance with a qualified HVAC technician. In addition, it’s a good idea to set it at a standard room temperature and avoid cranking the thermostat when it gets colder.
• ARE HEAT PUMPS ENERGY EFFICIENT IN WINTER?
• Yes, heat pumps can be especially energy efficient in winter. They are often more efficient than traditional heating systems because they transfer heat from existing sources rather than generating it. However, in extreme cold, air-source heat pumps may become less efficient or inoperable, in which case a back-up or secondary heating system must be used.
• WHAT ARE THE BEST HEATING SYSTEMS FOR COLD WEATHER?
• The best heating system for cold weather depends on your specific needs and preferences. Heat pumps can be cost-effective and efficient, but other options like furnaces and boilers may be better suited for extremely cold climates.
