It is so important to begin with a plan of your internal structural support and a template for your cake. Print lots and lots of reference pictures. You will be so happy you did!"

Long before having a creative cake life, I had a very creative and artistic life too. I enjoyed so much making my own Halloween costumes, I once welded a sculpture that was showcased in a night club. I even performed along side some very talented salsa dancers. I love going down memory lane to appreciate all the amazing experiences Life has given me. We all have a hidden talent. It’s up to us to find it, nourish it and share it. To not share it is an injustice to the world. What’s your hidden talent?

In 2015 I competed for the first time in the San Diego Cake Show. I’d always see some pretty impressive cakes to compete against. Nervous and doubtful, I decided to enter days before the entry deadline. I didn’t know what I was going to make. Somehow this design came to me and I ran with it. On the day of submitting the piece, I was short on time. With just a couple hours before having to meet the entry deadline, I rushed to paint the butterflies, and get them to stick to the posts. They kept falling off! I even had challenges getting it into the car because it was so tall! I was so relieved to finally put it down and walk away. I didn’t even stay for the show. I was pretty proud of my piece and so happy to be done with it. What a pleasant surprise when I returned at the end of the show and see I’d taken first place in my division!! I wish then I could’ve seen my own talents without the filters of doubt and fear. Don’t doubt your skills people! Believe in yourself, see the greatness other people see in you. Soar like the butterfly you are 🦋
