The staff at the Barnhart Cancer Center teamed up and made the holiday season a little brighter by collecting toys, clothing and gift cards for two families they chose to adopt for the holidays.

Good nutrition is important during cancer treatment. According to Jessi Janes, a clinical dietitian at the Barnhart Cancer Center at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, “You should include a variety of colorful vegetables, fiber-rich legumes, fresh fruits and whole grains. These foods give your body the vitamins and minerals it needs as well as fiber to support a healthy gut.” Read more about how to build a healthy diet.

With the death of former United States Secretary of State Colin Powell due to COVID-19 complications, many people asked what happened given he was fully vaccinated. Sharp Chula Vista Chief Medical Officer Dr. Samer Khodor spoke with FOX 5 San Diego and CBS 8 San Diego about the underlying conditions Gen. Powell had, including multiple myeloma, and the importance of vaccination among people who are immunocompromised, as well as those around them.

“In 2019, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer that had metastasized into my brain, into my bones,” Barnhart Cancer Center patient Francine Maigue said.

Francine was the first patient to receive treatment through an Ommaya reservoir at the cancer center, where she goes twice a week for chemotherapy. She is an advocate for raising awareness within her community as lung cancer remains the number one cause of cancer death in men and women across the nation. Joe Little with NBC 7 San Diego spoke to Francine’s caregivers at Sharp Chula Vista’s Outpatient Infusion Center about this treatment device that’s available close to home for patients in the South Bay.

Reverend Adlai Mack was treated for prostate cancer with high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy, a treatment offered at the Douglas & Nancy Barnhart at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center.

“HDR brachytherapy offers many benefits to patients,” says Dr. Ryan Bair, Reverend Mack’s radiation oncologist. “We can get it done in 2 to 3 days, the side effects are minimal, and cure rates are high.”
