Yoseikan II, LLC ( Karate Dojo) is a chartered school (1972) of the U. S. Chito-ryu Karate-do Federat Its roots stretch back to Okinawa and ultimately, to China.

Chito-ryu is the Japanese style of Karate taught at Yoseikan Cincinnati. It was founded by Doctor Tsuyoshi Chitose (1898—1984). Yoseikan II is a chartered school of the U. We celebrate the life of Chitose, Dr. Tsuyoshi (O Sensei), 10th Dan, founder of our style, Chito-Ryu. Born 10/18/1898 (died 6/5/1984) in Naha, Okinawa. Birth name Chinen (Gochoku) Masuo; he changed his name in 1922 attending med school in Tokyo, Japan. He started training in 1905 at age 7; first teacher was Unchu (Niigaki) Kamade Arakaki; opened his first dojo in March 1946.
The United States Chito-ryu Karate-do celebrates his birthday every year with a national clinic and banquet which was held this past weekend. It was a great day of training and celebration. Always good to be with more of our karate family.

Our Story

Chito-ryu is the Japanese style of Karate taught at Yoseikan Cincinnati. Its roots stretch back to Okinawa and ultimately, to China. It was founded by Doctor Tsuyoshi Chitose (1898—1984).

Yoseikan Cincinnati (originally known as Yoseikan II) is a chartered school of the U. S. Chito-ryu Karate-do Federation (U.S. Chito-Kai). It was established in 1972 by Lawrence C. Hawkins, Jr., Esq., Kyoshi, Hachi Dan (8th Degree black belt). He was the Chief Instructor of Yoseikan Cincinnati and is the Chairman Emeritus of the U.S. Chito-Kai. Lawrence C. Hawkins, III, Esq., Shihan, Roku Dan (6th Dan) has succeeded him as Chief Instructor of Yoseikan Cincinnati.

Kyoshi Lawrence C. Hawkins Jr. began his study of Chito-ryu in 1962 under the teaching of William J. Dometrich, Hanshi, Ku Dan (9th Degree Black Belt) (1935 - 2012). The U. S. Chito-Kai was founded by William J. Dometrich, Hanshi, and Barbara E. Dometrich, Meiyo Hanshi. Hanshi Dometrich was a direct student of O Sensei, Tsuyoshi Chitose. He is internationally recognized as a U.S. martial arts pioneer for maintaining the purity of the Chito-ryu karate-do and for his contributions and achievements as teacher, student and author.
