Happy new year! I have been out of the studio for the past week and a half for the holidays. My last day in the studio I had started this still life study, and basing my technique on what I learned from artist, . This is the progress so far. It is a fun challenge for myself to push my boundaries as a painter. It adds new dimension for future projects. I also feel like it is a nice way for me to reset creatively when I felt my work getting a little stale. This piece will be for sale when I’m done, be sure to DM me if interested.

Last month I attended a workshop at working on still life. Since I have been back, however, I have been working on holiday commissions and hadn’t had any time to practice what I learned. So today is a good day with a clear schedule to do some painting exercise.

So my wife reminded me that today is my 5 year anniversary of leaving the Sheriff’s office after 13 years to create art full time. I had a lot of support from people I worked with, and a few who urged me to be cautious about leaving. But I followed my heart and I have zero regrets. I’m thankful for my wife for pushing me to go for it. Thanks to everyone that has supported my journey.

In 2005 I started a career in law enforcement and joined the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department. Prior to that I was a student in Kent State University’s art department for 4 years. While at the Sheriff’s Department I continued practicing art on the side, making commission paintings and I donated pieces to several charitable causes. Early on, I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go as an artist, but was commissioned mostly to create sport paintings and portraits. In December, 2018, with the support of my wife and the Sheriff’s Office, I made the tough decision to leave a 13 year career as a Deputy to follow my passion and pursue art full time.
In my transition to becoming a full time artist I focused on building my website and creating a portfolio of works. I didn’t know what subject matter I was going to gravitate towards, but all I knew was I needed to just paint. I wanted to develop my technique and study other artists to figure out how I am going to become successful.
I paint in oil with a focus on light sources and textures. My style is a continuous development on technique and approaches. I’ve created from a number of personal photo references around Cincinnati and have been branching out to other cities for references. Lately I have been focusing on urban settings, inside the city, and using a lot of historic architecture for subject matter.
