Thanks to everyone who showed up to help rake. We had six people raking and moving branches. Steve Wood helped identify some of the volunteer saplings that we are going to encourage. We got 42 more bags of leaves packed. That makes a total of 88 so far this week!

Still want to visit? Grounds and outdoor sculptures remain open year-round during daylight hours, but all buildings are closed for the season. If you visit your National Park for the Arts, please remember:

Grounds clearing day is this Saturday (Nov. 4) at the museum (26 Mulberry St, Claremont) starting at 10 am. The Red River Charitable Foundation gave us a great head start today, by bagging 43 bags of leaves (!) but there are still more leaves to rake, and wood to move, and if we get to it, saplings to cut down. Please RSVP to dakinburdick at yahoo.com if you will be able to make it, and please park across the street so we can rake the whole lawn.

Hope to see you there!

This Youth Conservation Crew is hard at work removing invasive species including Norway Maple, invasive Honeysuckle, Common Barberry, Japanese Barberry, Common Buckthorn, Glossy Buckthorn, Burning Bush, Spindle Tree, Oriental Bittersweet, Multiflora Rose, and Japanese Tree Lilac.

Invasive plants are one of the most significant threats to native biodiversity and a major focus for land management in protected area. In forest ecosystems, invasive species can reduce native diversity, alter forest structure, suppress tree regeneration, alter nutrient cycling and modify disturbance regimes. Invasive plants can also negatively impact ecosystem services and human health. Removal of these plants will help stop their spread and make space for native species to grow. Native plants provide food and habitat for local wildlife with which they have co-evolved, including insects such as bees and butterflies, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals.

Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park has been recognized for having one of the lowest abundance of invasive species in national parks in the northeast. With help from the youth crew, the park will be able to continue to safeguard the park’s natural resources and cultural landscapes from the threats posed by invasive plants.

Attend the District's Annual Social and Awards Dinner on October 27th and learn about Coyotes from expert Chris Schadler.

Becoming Wolf: The Eastern Coyote in New Hampshire

Myths surround the coyote and cloud our understanding of it. Originating as the smaller western coyote, our eastern coyote shares genes with the eastern wolf, the grey wolf, and the western coyote. Its hybrid nature enables its resilience and adaptability to live almost everywhere in New England.

It has rewilded the northeast with its howl and ability to prey on large and small mammals but despite its ecological benefits, it is the most persecuted carnivore in North America. And despite human efforts to eradicate it, it survives and thrives among us.

********

Chris Schadler, M.S., Conservation Biology, will discuss the ecology and behavior of our eastern coyote and how to live with this creature. Chris has over 40 years of wolf and coyote research, has farmed sheep successfully with coyotes as neighbors and will demonstrate that “knowledge is power” when it comes to living with coyotes.

The Claremont NH Historical Society invites you to join us for a presentation on the History & Progress of the Ko’asek Abenaki by Chief & Elder Paul “Gwilawato” Bunnell

12:00-1:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 21
At the Claremont Senior Center, 5 Acer Heights Road

This event is free and open to the public

Chief Paul has devoted 45 years to studying and teaching genealogy in American Loyalist Studies and Abenaki and Wabanaki genealogies. He has authored over 30 publications and many articles in both areas and other subjects. He joined the Ko’asek band in 2004, was voted in as Sub-Chief in 2008, and became Chief of the Ko'asek (Co'wasuck) Traditional Band of the Sovereign Abenaki upon resignation of his predecessor in 2010. He was elected as Chief in 2013 and reelected again in 2020. He has created a database to properly establish native records. He is also a board member of the Claremont NH Historical Society.

Lands in Claremont were donated to the tribe in 2020 and plans are in place to develop a cultural and nature center devoted to indigenous and nature education for members and the community.

10/03/2023

If you would like to join the Claremont NH Historical Society, please attend our annual meeting on Oct. 14, 12-2:30 pm, at the Claremont Savings Bank Community Center, 152 South Street. And if not, please join us anyways for a presentation by Dr. Steven C. Eames on Academic History and Living History.

Historians learn and practice historical research in higher education and publish books and articles on the past to share their research with others.

Living Historians come from all walks of life to wear historical clothing and use historical implements to depict or teach about everyday life in the past. The people involved either work in Public History at museums or are enthusiasts who recreate or reenact the past on their weekends.

The relationship between these two approaches is fascinatingly complex. Dr. Steven C. Eames is very familiar with both approaches. He was a Professor of History for thirty-five years, researching the impact of war on both soldiers and civilians. His published works include Sacrifice of Self: Nahant and the Civil War (which won the American Association for State and Local History Award of Merit, the Albert B. Corey Award from the American Historical Association, as well as an award from the New England Museum Association), and Rustic Warriors: Warfare and the Provincial Soldier on the New England Frontier, 1689-1748. He has also worked at a living history museum and has been a living history reenactor for fifty years, recreating a wide range of periods from the 1600s through the twentieth century.

Please join us as Dr. Eames discusses the relationship between academic history and living history and how these two approaches differ, interact, and inform each other. This is a unique opportunity to learn from someone who is a true expert in both fields.

150th Fiske Free Library - Off Broad Street Players - 9/24/23 09/28/2023

THANK YOU! to everyone who attended the Cemetery Walk on Sunday afternoon! The cloud cover did not interfere with our performance & we were so grateful that there was no rain so that we could be outdoors. THANKS also to Josh Nelson for filming the production for CCTV....and here it is! I'd say all of our actors did a wonderful job telling the stories of the "spirits" who lived here in Claremont in times past. Each in their own way, influenced literature, publishing, and education. We're pleased that sharing stories of their lives helped us to celebrate the Fiske Free Library's 150th Anniversary!
