CLARKSVILLE PARKS AND RECREATION RECEIVES SUPPORTING HEALTHY AGING THROUGH PARKS AND RECREATION (SHAPR) 3.0 GRANT

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Clarksville Parks and Recreation is excited to announce a new program aimed at improving health and wellness in the community: Tai Chi for Arthritis. This low-impact exercise class is designed for individuals of all ages, with a special focus on adults managing arthritis and other chronic conditions.

Thanks to a generous grant from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), with funding support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Clarksville Parks and Recreation is one of 35 park and recreation agencies nationwide to receive the SHAPR 3.0 award.

Through this grant, the department will offer the Tai Chi for Arthritis program, providing Clarksville residents an opportunity to engage in physical activity that has been proven to reduce pain, improve quality of life, and help prevent falls.

“Six in 10 adults in the United States suffer from one or more chronic conditions, including arthritis, which affects many people in Clarksville,” said Jennifer Letourneau, Director of Clarksville Parks and Recreation. “This grant from NRPA and the CDC allows us to provide a new resource for older adults and anyone seeking to improve their overall health and wellness. Tai Chi for Arthritis is a gentle but effective way to stay active and manage chronic conditions.”

The Tai Chi for Arthritis program, developed by the Tai Chi for Health Institute, will begin on October 21, 2024, and will be held every Monday and Friday through December 13, 2024. Each class lasts 45 minutes, and the program will be led by certified instructors trained specifically to teach this evidence-based program. Registration is open now through October 21, and the cost is $20, covering all sessions.

The program is ideal for individuals looking for a low-impact way to stay active, particularly those managing arthritis or other chronic conditions. Clarksville Parks and Recreation intends to add more Tai Chi programming throughout 2025.

FORT DEFIANCE TO HOST SEVIER DAYS EVENT
Journey into Clarksville's Frontier and Colonial History

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Fort Defiance Interpretive Center is excited to announce the return of its annual event, Sevier Days, a living history event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14.

This educational and entertaining event will feature Native American and frontier re-enactors showcasing various activities, including flint knapping, an authentic blacksmith operation, frontier camp life, and flintlock musket firing. The Traveling Caudells will also be performing period music during the event.

Sevier Days provides an excellent opportunity for the community to step back in time and experience the daily life, challenges, and triumphs of early settlers in the Clarksville region. Visitors will have the chance to witness historical skills and trades up close, gaining a deeper appreciation for the cultural heritage of the area.

William Parker, Historical Interpreter at Fort Defiance, shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming event, saying, "Sevier Days is a unique opportunity to transport yourself back in time and discover the incredible history that shaped Clarksville. It's an event that appeals to history enthusiasts of all ages."

Sevier Days is open to all members of the community, and admission is free.

About Fort Defiance
The Fort Defiance Civil War Park and Interpretive Center, 120 Duncan Street, is operated by the Clarksville Parks & Recreation Department. The fort, which overlooks the confluence of the Red and Cumberland rivers, was a cornerstone of the Confederate defense of the area and an important part of the Union occupation of Clarksville. In 1982, Judge and Mrs. Sam Boaz donated the property to the City of Clarksville. In 2008, the City secured a $2.2 million federal grant that was combined with local funding to build the interpretive center and walking trails. The Center features exhibits about the local area and the fort during the Civil War.
