What do the printed numbers on the side of the tires mean?

✅Section width indicates the tire's width measurement in millimeters.

✅ Aspect ratio measures the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the tire's width.

✅ The single letter tells you about the internal construction of the tire. R stands for radial tires, which are the most common type of tire used on cars.

✅ The wheel's diameter is the measurement across the face of the wheel (in inches).

✅ The tire load index indicates your tire's capability to carry a load at maximum air pressure.

✅ The speed rating indicates the optimal speed that the tire can safely maintain over time.

✅ The DOTr or Department of Transportation marking is your tire's identification number. It displays the facility where your tire was created as well as the week and year it was made.

To know the manufacture date of your tire, look for the DOTr symbol at the end of the serial number. The first two digits refer to the week the tire is made, and the last two digits refer to the year the tire is made. In the example photo below (DOT XX 9YXX 1224), "12" indicates that the tire was manufactured in the 12th week of the year. The "23" indicates it was manufactured in the year 2023.

Tires expire six years from their manufacture date. If your tires are not yet worn out after 5 years from their manufacture date, get them examined by a professional to avoid unanticipated problems when traveling.
