Petoskey stones are composed of a fossilized rugose coral, Hexagonaria Percarinata; formed during the Devonian era over 350 million years ago! Petoskey stones formed as a result of glaciation, in which sheets of ice plucked stones from the bedrock, grinding off the rough edges and depositing them in a portion of Michigan’s lower peninsula. The petoskey stone was also named the state stone of Michigan in 1965.
