Big pattern change happening by the end of the work week. We'll see highs well below the average of around 75. More 60s than 70s, with lows in the 40s! Cool weather fans... it's almost here!

Hurricane season is officially over - Happy December everyone!

Old school hurricane tracking maps are cool. This one is from my buddy Andrew Hazleton who is with NOAA's Hurricane Research Division in Miami. It's the final tracking map of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which comes to a close today. Not quite as busy as some forecasts, but there were serious impacts from Ian and Fiona. Nicole, while not a major hurricane, caused significant flooding on our east coast. This season also proved the point we stress over and over. Regardless of the total number of storms in a season, just one of them over you will make for a very bad season. For our friends in Southwest Florida, it was a very bad season. I would expect some changes to the messaging from the National Hurricane Center with tweaks to the "cone" front and center.

Nicole update

Evening Nicole Thoughts:
1. Based on the current NHC track, Nicole will be a low-end hurricane upon landfall. Storm Surge of 3 to 5 feet on the East coast if landfall occurs near high tide. Wind will cause some power outages, branches down, pool cage screen damage, etc. This is NOT a major storm, but it still needs to be respected. If you live on the EAST coast, be prepared.

2. If you live in the Bay Area, this will be like most every East coast storm we see. Winds gusting in bands between 45 and 55 mph and even higher in Polk and Highlands counties. This type of storm will NOT bring structural damage, but gusty winds will certainly cause isolated power outages. Rainfall of 2 to 4 inches seems about right as it's a fast-moving system.

3. The worst of the winds will be overnight Wednesday night and through the day on Thursday. Winds will wind down later on Thursday.

4. Surge is still a bit of a question mark. We will have a very high tide on Thursday and Friday. IF the storm manages to get offshore, it could bring some water into the coastline. At this point, that is NOT the forecast. A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for areas WELL to our North. They aren't in effect for the Bay Area.

5. There is no studio available with election coverage, so I'll find a closet or something to bring a LIVE DPL tonight around 7:30 or 8. We do what we have to do, right? 😀

6. Rule #7 Nothing to freak out about. Prepare for a nasty stretch of weather for about 18 hours and then we will see MUCH colder weather arrive this weekend. Something a lot of folks are anxious to hear.

Confidence high something brewing that will zig zag into Florida then effect the east coast states in a few days. Model trends getting stronger. Waters are in the 83/84 degree range so very possible.
