Women Veterans have been involved with Project Healing Waters since our earliest programs began, at the highest level of Volunteer leadership, holding numerous positions at the National Staff level, and growing in number at both the Participant and Volunteer level. On today's Women Veterans Day, it is our honor to recognize 76 years since the signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, empowering women to serve as permanent, regular members across all existing branches of service.
When veterans get back to the civilian world, we often realize just how much community meant to us and how we deeply need it in our lives.
The camaraderie of military life often leaves a void that isn't easily filled when we leave the service, this can lead to feelings of isolation.
This is why we are seeing more and more veteran organizations pop up across the globe. While we see many different missions, outlets, and avenues of helping veterans through their journey, community is a part of every one.
Project Healing Waters has been here for nearly twenty years to help fill this void. Our program is more than just fly fishing; it is a bridge to a new community.

"It doesn't matter if I don't catch a single fish, just being out on the water and being outside has such an impact on my mental health. I will take any opportunity that I can to get outside and spend time with my tribe."
- Brian F., 5th SFG Veteran
Don't let the winter stop you from connecting with your community and getting outside. Our programs run year round and our community is often going off and having their own meet ups with one another.
Your tribe is here, join us.

"Volunteering with Project Healing Waters has been a journey of discovery and fulfillment. When I first joined as a volunteer, I was looking for a way to give back to my community, but I never anticipated how much I would receive in return. The joy and resilience I see in our participating Veterans as they engage with fly fishing and the community is truly inspiring. It reminds me of the healing power of patience, nature, and human connection.
Each session, whether it's fly tying indoors or casting lines on a riverbank, brings new stories and triumphs. I've seen individuals who arrived with the weight of the world on their shoulders leave with a sense of accomplishment and a smile on their face. It's not just about teaching fishing; it's about witnessing transformation and being a part of a supportive community. The gratitude I receive from participants fuels my passion for volunteering and makes every moment worth it."
Extremely powerful words from one of our long time volunteers.

In this video, our volunteer Fabio Malaspina shows you how to tie a "White Woolly Bu**er" fly using Estaz as the body material. You can tie this fly in different colors, black, olive, purple, and white.
This is a fly that you can use to target: trout, small and large mouth bass. You can dead drift it or strip it.
Materials list:
Thread: UTC 140 white or color to match body
Hook: 4XL streamer hook size 4 down to 10. I used an Orvis 8808 size 6. Another good hook choice is a Daiichi 2220.
Bead: Gold bead to match hook size.
Tail: White Wooly Bu**er Marabou feather tip and Pearl Kristal Flash (red or olive Kristal flash would work too)
Body: Peal Estaz size medium
Hackle: White saddle hackle or white Schlappen

"Before I found Project Healing Waters, I struggled with the transition back to civilian life. It felt like I was lost in a sea of uncertainty, trying to find my bearings. But from the moment I joined one of their fly fishing programs, I felt a sense of belonging and peace I hadn't felt in years. The patience and tranquility of fishing, combined with the camaraderie of fellow veterans and volunteers, have been incredibly healing for me.
It's not just about learning to fish – it's about rediscovering a purpose, a connection to nature, and a community that truly understands and cares. I'm endlessly grateful for the support and experiences Project Healing Waters has provided me."

At Project Healing Waters, one of the largest and most important aspects of our programs is fly tying. This therapeutic and artistic activity offers our participants a unique opportunity to develop new skills while also engaging in a mindful and relaxing practice.
Fly tying not only allows our veterans to connect with nature, but it also creates a sense of community and camaraderie among participants. As they learn to create their own flies, our veterans gain a sense of accomplishment and pride that can be incredibly healing and empowering.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced fly tier, our programs are designed to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone. So come join us and experience the therapeutic benefits of fly tying at your local program!

For many years, Project Healing Waters has participated in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). The CFC is the official workplace giving campaign for federal employees and federal retirees. We want to raise awareness so that current federal employees and federal retirees know that they can choose PHW as a charity to support through the CFC.
The Project Healing Waters CFC code is #82526. If you are a federal employee, you can pledge an amount to be withheld regularly from your pay beginning in January of each year or make a one-time gift. In order to make a donation to Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, you must use our CFC code #82526.
For more information, ask the CFC representative at your agency for a copy of the CFC pamphlet that is available each fall. As always, PHW appreciates the support we receive to help increase the healing opportunities for all of the Veterans we serve. It does make a difference!
We may never say it enough but we want to give a huge thank you to all of our volunteers and supporters. We couldn't do it without you!
