As we wrap up Women in Construction Week 2024, we honor and celebrate the exceptional women who are vital to Haskell's success and the broader construction industry. Today, we spotlight Innovation Strategist Leah Royalty and Assistant Project Manager Sydney Smith, whose expertise and dedication exemplify the incredible impact women have in shaping our projects and driving innovation.
This week coincides with International Women's Day, reinforcing our commitment to building a gender-equal world. A world that values diversity, equity, and inclusivity, and celebrates the differences that make us stronger. At Haskell, we stand united in our efforts to .
Haskell’s ongoing Field-Focused initiative regularly recognizes our leaders and tradespeople, who are out there on job sites delivering operational excellence every day. We’re proud that our many valued customers have entrusted us with creating their large and complex capital projects, and we salute our team members in the field whose commitment and craftsmanship are the bedrock of that trust.
At Haskell, we believe in the power of community and the vital role that small businesses play in shaping robust economies. We’re excited to partner with the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce to host an outreach event to introduce our company to the local subcontracting community and highlight an exciting upcoming Large Industrial Construction Project in the Montgomery area.
This is part of Haskell's ongoing mission to create inclusive opportunities and support the growth of diverse businesses. We encourage and promote the development of small businesses through our outreach and training workshops, and we strive to provide an inclusive environment for small, minority-owned, women-owned, veteran-owned (including service-disabled) and HUBZone-certified businesses.
By joining forces with these vibrant enterprises, we aim to not only enhance our projects but also contribute to the economic prosperity of the communities we serve.
At Haskell, we're taking a significant step forward in safety by outfitting our craft workforce with WaveCel's T2+ hard hats. This cutting-edge technology, recognized by TIME Magazine as one of “The Best Inventions of 2020,” offers superior protection against traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) compared to standard helmets.
WaveCel’s unique design absorbs and reduces rotational forces from impacts, a crucial feature given that most TBIs in construction result from front, back, and side impacts. Traditional hard hats, unchanged for over 50 years, only protect against top impacts. WaveCel addresses this gap with its innovative mesh structure that forms a protective dome around the head.
This initiative is part of our commitment to ensuring the highest safety standards for our team. By the end of January, we will have distributed over 550 WaveCel helmets, with plans to extend this protection to our contract partners in the coming months.
We believe in safeguarding our most valuable asset – our workforce. Ensuring their well-being is at the heart of our safety values, allowing them to return home safely every day and enjoy a quality of life we all cherish.
For safe, efficient, and timely project delivery, trust Haskell. Reach out to discuss your project needs and experience our commitment to safety and quality.

On Saturday, Haskell partnered with Mayport Coastal Middle School for completion of this year’s Green Apple Day of Service, our tenth year of participation. Haskell was joined by past high school interns, current Mayport students and parents, and representatives from Creekside’s Engineering Club, the City of Atlantic Beach, and the United States Navy. Native landscaping was added to the school’s Anchor Quad, learning stations provided near the pond, an outdoor chalkboard teaching space created and new mulch provided at the Octopus Garden. Thank you to the year’s partners: B3 Millwork, Liberty Landscaping and Mulch Masters.
Construction Inclusion Week kicks off today, and Haskell is proud to sponsor this important initiative. We’re also committed to making it a meaningful experience, and we look forward to offering content that opens a window into our world based on each day’s theme.
Chairman, CEO and President Jim O’Leary gets the week started by addressing today’s theme of Commitment & Accountability. Expanding Diversity and Inclusion is a strategic pillar of Haskell 2025, our roadmap for meaningful growth, and we are committed to that crucial goal.
“We promote change through education, engagement and awareness, our unique beliefs the way we look, the way we think, where we come from, and how we were raised,” O’Leary says. “It is our differences that make Haskell among the best in the industry.”
Neither leadership nor accountability is top-down but rather shared responsibilities that each of us, regardless of role, title or position can actively demonstrate. In the context of diversity, equity and inclusion, we all must be leaders, modeling the behavior we want to see in others and holding ourselves and others accountable to actions that help inspire and achieve that vision.
Follow us throughout Construction Inclusion Week on LinkedIn and at Haskell.com to learn more about how we’re working to expand diversity and inclusivity.

Haskell celebrated the groundbreaking of the LaSalle Street Pump Station today with our client, City of Jacksonville, our design-build team and our partners. We are proud to be part of an excellent team charting the future of our city.
The LaSalle Street Pump Station project will reduce stormwater flooding on LaSalle Street and the surrounding neighborhood. The new pump station is one of a series of planned improvements to the stormwater collection system in the San Marco neighborhood. Once constructed, this project will significantly reduce adverse flood impacts, which will result in cost-savings and allow residents and businesses within the basin to bounce back more quickly after storm events.
This pump station is funded in part by a $20 million-dollar grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Resilient Florida Grant program. The City is matching the other $20 million dollars.

At Haskell, we're always looking for innovative ways to improve safety on the job site. 🛡️ One area of particular concern is the risk of underground utility strikes during construction. While traditional methods like calling 811 and soft-digging have helped, the problem still persists. That's why we're proud to leverage technology through our venture capital and innovation arm, Dysruptek, to implement three additional steps: Scan the subsurface, Visualize the impediments, and Ensure a safe dig. These cutting-edge techniques have been a game-changer for our team, helping us avoid costly and dangerous utility strikes.
At Haskell, we take safety seriously every single day. But this week is extra special because it's Construction Safety Week! We're excited to showcase the amazing people, practices, and methods that make up our world-class safety culture. Join us each day this week as we share insights and messages about health and safety, starting with today's kickoff message from Director of Corporate Safety Brian Roundtree. Let's work together to make every day a safe one! https://www.haskell.com/insights/strong-voices-safe-choices-haskell-personifies-safety-week-theme/
