Do you have a reliable process for making decisions?

It sounds so logical and simple, but most of us are flying blind and hoping for the best when we make decisions.

You probably think your process is great, especially if it is slow and deliberate.

In this episode, I'm challenging what you think you know about good decision making, and proposing a simpler, more effective approach to decisions.

One that will help you make decisions more quickly and simply so you can spend more time actually doing things and making progress instead of pondering ideas and hoping you get it right.

Successfully Combining Mindset With Strategy
Recently I’ve been covering several aspects of setting goals, planning for the next year, and setting yourself up for the future you want. However, even the most well thought out strategies and plans can fail if you don’t also look into your mindset as you create and execute your plan. If you've ever been inspired by a great business strategy book or consultant but had your plan fall flat, you know what I'm talking about. The thing is, you aren't inherently a failure or flop. Which means you can totally try again with completely different results. Most likely you didn't have the mindset you needed to completely follow through on your desired strategy. This week on the podcast, I'm diving into how to develop the mindset you need to execute any plan, including examples of what works and what doesn't. Whatever you're hoping to do differently next year, you'll want to get your brain on board now. You know how every year you make these great plans to do better next year? I’m talking about plans to improve and grow your firm. To change your pricing. To hire new or better employees. To niche down to a client base you actually want to work with and have really great expertise at serving. And even better, to work fewer hours and take home a bigger profit. But then the year goes by and you’re busy and stressed, and you find yourself making similar plans, goals and dreams again. I want that to change for you. These last two months of the year are the perfect time to start that change, by doing a new kind of reflection and evaluation of the past year. And setting yourself up for easy actions in the new year. The only way to make a change is to take new actions. And the best way to take new actions (other than actually doing them) is to get your brain onboard with what you want. In this week’s podcast episode, I’m walking you through that, just like I do with my clients. Listen now at the link in my profile or wherever you get your podcast fix.

No boss is perfect. But sometimes all you can do is focus on their shortcomings to the point where it’s hard for you to focus on your own work and feel good about showing up each day. This week on the podcast, I’m addressing this question: How should I handle working for a less than stellar boss? (And yes, you can change the word boss to client if you are a solo practitioner.) I don’t think there’s a lot of useful information out there if you actually like your job and want to stay where you are. Listen in to find out why what we usually do to cope doesn’t actually work, and what to do instead. The answer is not to just suck it up, gaslight yourself, or find a new job. The question of whether you’re doing enough at work seems to weigh heavily on many financial pro’s minds. And it is closely aligned with a general feeling of being behind most of the time. Your to do list pretty much never ends, and seems to just grow every day. You can work 14 hours a day (and more) and still leave your desk feeling like you didn’t accomplish enough that day. This week on the podcast, I share how to know if you’re doing enough at work, or not. And what to do about your answer. Listen via the link in my profile.

Mistakes happen. They’re part of life. But what happens when you make one for your client? One that impacts their money or their business. There is not a lot of room for error. And I bet you put a lot of pressure on yourself to prevent mistakes and even more after one happens. So what do you do when it happens? How do you navigate it? Tune into this week’s podcast and find out: 1. Why and how mistakes happen in the finance and accounting industries. 2. Why mistakes seem like such a problem, but aren’t actually as terrible as you make them out to be. 3. And what you can do differently the next time you make a mistake. Knowing these three things will make it much easier to navigate them, and get through your day to day work without feeling as stressed and pressured to be perfect.

Last week I attended my coaching school’s annual mastermind, and got inspired by this question: What if every single accountant had access to a coach? Imagine how much more you might enjoy your life. And how amazingly well firms and accounting/finance departments would perform every year. Coaching has been the way top executives and business leaders have created their results for several decades now. It’s proven to be a highly effective way to improve individual, team, and firm performance. And coaching is more accessible to all of us every day. In fact, I believe coaching will be crucial to repositioning accounting as the valuable, attractive, desirable profession that it used to be. And it is a key piece of building strong teams with a diverse, talented, engaged, and lasting workforce. If you’ve doubted coaching, are curious what it can do for you or your firm, or even what it can do for the industry as a whole, don’t miss this episode.

Are you a hot mess perfectionist or an imperfect expert? The hot mess perfectionist is the woman who feels like she’s never being, doing, or having enough because she just can’t seem to use her work skills to achieve in her life. The imperfect expert is great at what she does and also knows that perfection is not a useful goal. Actually, you’re probably both of these characters. We all are. Curious to know why you are both of these and what it means for your stress and your success? Bonus: get my 5 steps to reduce the impact of perfectionism on your life. Feel out of control in some part of your life? You’re not alone. This is such a common topic with my clients. I feel it, too. And I know how to get past that and create the control you want. In this episode of the podcast, I’m sharing some very actionable ways to create more control in your life. You can implement them right now. Listen to the full episode at the link in my bio.

Everyone has had at least one difficult client. Probably several. What if those clients weren’t so difficult? Imagine how much easier your work would be. In this week’s episode we’re diving deeper than simply how to deal with a client in the moment. And we’re looking at how difficult clients impact more than just the time you spend directly talking with them. Catch the full episode at the link in my profile.

This week on the podcast, we’re talking about masculine and feminine energy and how being aware of it can help you run a better business and enjoy your work more without feeling like you’re fighting your way through each day. This topic sounds more woo than the things I usually talk about, but it is something I have found very useful in understanding my own way of operating in my business. It has been incredibly useful in understanding my motivations, my energy, and how I show up and how I interact with other people. And it helped me understand other people’s motivations better. So to talk about this subject and share more about it with you, I’ve invited my friend and fellow coach, @melanieshmois to talk more in depth about masculine and feminine energy and how you can apply what we share today to your own business and life. I think you’ll enjoy this one, and find some interesting explanations and understanding about where you struggle and where you feel totally at home. It’s easy to think that in order to succeed, you need to know all the answers, exactly what to do, when to do it, and how to do it all, right now. However, the way you actually grow your business is one decision and one action at a time. Without every answer and without all the certainty and guarantees your brain desires. I’m walking you through how growing your business and changing your life one decision at a time actually looks, what it means for you as a busy business owner growing her business, how it applies to your life, and how to put it to use every single day. And I’m sharing three questions that will help you stick with this approach, even when you feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of your goals and to-do list. While the title of CEO generally falls on you when you start a business, how often do you really practice the mindset of actually being the CEO of your business? For a lot of women, this title and the concept of thinking like one, feels very uncomfortable. It could be your socialization that it’s CEO’s are unpleasant, ruthless people. It could also be that you’re used to thinking of yourself more as the skilled practitioner that you were in your industry before starting your business. Whatever your reason, the practice of thinking like a CEO is a key to your growth as a business owner and for the growth of your business. Because a business without a strong leader is going to struggle. Listen in today (link in profile) to learn three guiding principles to help you practice your CEO mindset every day. Because like any skill, it is a practice and it’s something you can strengthen a little bit more each day.

Pretty much all of my clients are hard workers and high achievers. It’s just how they operate. And I bet it’s how you operate, too. But what happens when you work too hard or hustle too much? How do you know how much is too much or too little? And how to you balance it all, while also getting your work done, achieving your goals, having a life, and maintaining your health and sanity? In this episode, I share four steps to help find your own balance between hard work and hustle. It’s a lot easier than you probably think, and it may be counter to what you’ve been taught and believe currently. Have you ever noticed how when you’re supposed to be working your mind is racing with all the things you need or want to do at home? And when you’re spending time with family or friends or supposedly having fun, you’re obsessively running work ideas and scenarios through your brain in the background? This is pretty common for women entrepreneurs because we hold so many roles both in our business and at home. And it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Today I’m talking about why this happens (as in what is going on in your brain), and how you can bring yourself back focusing on where you are when you are there. Without beating yourself up and forcing yourself with willpower and judgment. Listen to the full episode at the link in my profile.

You face a lot of obstacles as a business owner. We could talk all day about all the obstacles. But there is one obstacle that is the hardest to overcome. This one obstacle is one that if you learned how to understand it and solve for it, every single other problem in your business would become much smaller and more solvable. When you can overcome this obstacle, you will no longer be at the mercy of any circumstance. You don’t have to wait for any particular thing to happen or change. Listen in (link in profile) to find out what this obstacle is and three ways to overcome it.

Even the most decisive women I know sometimes struggle to figure out what they actually want out of their business or at home, or to stay committed to their priorities consistently. If this is you, it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you or that you’re doing anything wrong. Of course you struggle with recognizing your own voice and desires and then also trusting it. There are way more suggestions, rules, strategies, and influences swirling around you and inside your brain every day than you can keep track of. And these are constantly distracting you, offering you decision points, and making you question yourself. Listen to today’s episode to learn how to recognize your own voice, choose it, and trust it. Because doing so makes pursuing and achieving your goals feel more natural, easy, and fun.

You’re supposed to start the year off strong, right? Maybe. But what if you feel like you’re already behind? Maybe December and January didn’t go the way you wanted, and you’re still catching up. Today’s podcast episode is for you. I’m going to show you why all is not lost if you didn’t hit the ground running in January. There’s no need to give up, feel lost, or spend a bunch of time trying to catch up. I’m going to help you get moving so you don’t stay in a place that feels like crap for several months. Because that is the only problem you actually face when you think you’re behind. Choosing to focus on what went wrong instead of what went right and what to do next. So let’s get you moving on all those big results I know you want to create this year. Listen to the full episode at the link in my bio.

I know there are all sorts of memes and posts about how comparing yourself to other people in business is bad. But is it always bad? And why do we still do it if we know it feels terrible and doesn’t help us achieve our goals? In this episode I’m sharing some of the compare and despair my clients and I have done recently along with how we have used coaching to move through it and reduce its impact on our performance going forward. Even if you think your compare and despair is not that big of a deal, the impact of comparing yourself with others and spinning in despair can have a lot more impact on you than simply the time and energy lost to thinking about it directly in the moment. So listen now and learn my tips for changing the course of your business and your experience of doing both business and life by stopping your own compare and despair patterns. #dontcompareyourself #comparison #womensupportingwomen #womeninbusiness #trustyourself
