CMNH Natural Areas is holding a Brook Trout Open House on Sunday, June 11, in conjunction with Paul Pira of the Geauga Park District. This will take place at the Bass Lake Preserve/Spring Brook Sanctuary in Geauga County. The Trout Club has been a big supporter of native Ohio brook trout restoration efforts and this a great chance to see these fish close up. Registration is required! To register go to https://www.cmnh.org/calendar/brook-trout-at-bass-lake
Trout Club Board Member, Jim Lampros, has been busy this Spring assisting the Ohio Division of Wildlife in the first-ever study of Lake Erie's migratory smallmouth bass. These fish ascend tributary streams to spawn, but very little is known about them. Here's what Lampros has to say:
"This spring marks the beginning of a two-year, joint study of Great Lakes tributary spawning smallmouth bass. The study includes river-tagged bass from Ohio's Lake Erie Tributaries, Wisconsin's Green Bay (Lake MI) tributaries and more. Funding for the study was granted by the Great Lakes Fisheries Commission, in part due to expressed written support from angler groups including CMNHTC.
The two year study involves the implanting of acoustic telemetry tags into fish who are then released to migrate. The tags emit acoustic frequency that will ping an array of acoustic receivers in tributaries as well as the in the lakes themselves, allowing scientists to identify timing and location of specific tagged fish as they migrate in the vicinity of these receivers. DNA samples are also being taken from fish to analyze the uniqueness of populations from one river system to the next. Nearly all of the allotted tags for Ohio tributaries have already been put into fish in The Grand River and Conneaut Creek. If you happen to catch one of these fish, you will note the visible bright orange ID tags near the caudal fin (rear back) of the fish - PLEASE release these fish safely and be sure to call ODNR to report the details of your catch including date and location! This angler reported data will supplement the acoustic data and help scientists understand fish behavior, movements, and impact on the overall Lake Erie Smallmouth bass fishery!"
Thanks to the Geauga Park District for their recognition of our support to their Earth Day initiative. This tree planting is a first step in an upcoming cold water stream creation project supporting Ohio’s native brook trout restoration.
