Echelon, which is an organization of young business professionals who are focused on community outreach on behalf of The Salvation Army, hosted a back-to-school carnival for all the families who reside at The Salvation Army’s Zelma George Family Shelter, located at 1710 Prospect Ave in Cleveland. Salvation Army Medina distributes 300 backpacks filled with school supplies to county students Backpacks filled with new school supplies were handed out to 300 Medina County children on Monday night as the Salvation Army Medina hosted its Backpack to School Bash.

Salvation Army Sprinter makes the Olympic Finals!

Salvation Army Sprinter makes the Olympic Finals! Tapiwa Makarawu, from Zimbabwe, qualified for the final of the Olympic 200 meters, finishing third in his heat with a time of 20.16 seconds. Tapiwa's parents are Salvation Army Officers, Majors Richard and Listener Makarawu, who currently serve in Harare, Zimbabwe. Watch and cheer on Tapiwa, the fastest Salvationist in the world in the finals on Thursday at 2:30 PM!

Meet Jelani Weekes Assistant Divisional Music & Arts Director for The Salvation Army Northeast Ohio Division

Jelani Weekes!

SM: What Corps/Division are you part of?
JW: The East Cleveland Corps in the Northeast Ohio Division.

SM: What is your leadership position or involvement in corps groups?
JW: I am the assistant praise & worship leader and the Singing Company leader.

SM: Where are you currently employed?
JW: I am the Assistant Divisional Music & Arts Director for The Salvation Army Northeast Ohio Division.

SM: What is your favorite music composition?
JW: I have a lot of music compositions I like, but here are a few that come to mind. Daystar (Ray Steadman-Allen), Rhapsody on St Francis (Andrew Wainwright), Hear the Call (Marcus Venables), The Kingdom Triumphant (Eric Ball), Fire in the Blood (Paul Lovatt-Cooper)

SM: What is your favorite Bible verse?
JW: Ephesians 4:26-27 “In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.”

SM: What is your most impactful musical memory/moment?
JW: When the New York Staff Band went to Japan in 2018. Some highlights from that trip were going to the Nishiarai Garaxity Hall where the Hamahata-Nisha Elementary School Brass Band played Renaissance (Graham) from memory and having the opportunity to play Fire in the Blood (Cooper) with them. Also playing The Kingdom Triumphant (Ball) at Tokyo Opera Hall with an organist. It was a very powerful moment. Still gives me chills thinking about it today!

SM: Who is someone that has impacted your spiritual/musical journey?
JW: My mother (Donna Thomas), Ken Burton, Gordon Ward, Chris Ward, Ron Waiksnoris, & Bob Jones were all mentors, and leaders who showed me how to use my musical gifts to serve God.
What is your vision for the future of SA music?
My vision for the future of The Salvation Army is to continue to enhance and grow the music and arts program. Music saved my life and kept me close to God during very difficult times. I want to be there for others in similar situations. I want to teach about how to use your musical and artistic gifts for God, and how to grow spiritually as disciples of Christ.
