Heartfelt thanks to everybody who attended one or more of my three favorite films yesterday at the Cleveland Cinematheque at the Cleveland Institute of Art. And apologies again for the inept short that preceded each of those feature-length masterpieces. -John Ewing
Perhaps you have no interest today in seeing three of the best movies ever made (Orson Welles' THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS at 2 pm; Yasujiro Ozu's LATE SPRING at 4 pm; and George Stevens' SHANE at 7 pm). But how about three of the most undistinguished movies ever made? On his last day as Cinematheque director, John Cameron Ewing presents the only three films he ever directed, all short comedies, one before each of the features mentioned above: THE FIRST PICTURE SHOW at 2 pm; THE VENDING MACHINE at 4 pm; and THE MYTH OF NARCISSUS at 7 pm. We'd like to tell you that these newly restored mini-movies are themselves worth the price of admission. But they're not. However, the feature attractions definitely are!
Yes, it's a great western. But it is so much more. See for yourself Sun at 7 pm.
SHANE | Cinematheque John Ewing’s all-time favorite film is the one that hooked him on movies almost 60 years ago. George Stevens’ celebrated western concerns a feud between cattlemen and homesteaders in late 19th-century Wyoming—and the mysterious stranger who sides with the “sodbusters.” Based on a novel by ...

If you've never seen this exquisite film, don't miss it. Sunday at 4 pm.
LATE SPRING | Cinematheque John Ewing’s favorite movie by his second-favorite filmmaker, Yasujiro Ozu, is a piercingly beautiful family drama in which an elderly widower tries to marry off his devoted grown daughter—who doesn’t want to leave him. Ozu’s two greatest actors—Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara—star, and they...
John Ewing: Talking movies with the man who co-founded Cleveland's Cinematheque…before he rides into the sunset – The Land For nearly four decades, John Ewing has served as director at the Cinematheque at the Cleveland Institute of Art in Cleveland’s University Circle district. On June 30, he will show his final three films — three of his all-time favorites — before, like Alan Ladd in Shane, he rides off on his ho...
"Magnificent" is right. See Orson Welles' sophomore masterpiece Sun at 2 pm.
THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS | Cinematheque John Ewing’s favorite movie by his favorite filmmaker, Orson Welles, is not Citizen Kane but the director’s follow-up to that masterpiece. Ambersons is an elegiac chronicle of the decline of a wealthy Midwestern family at the beginning of the 20th century, during the rise of the automobile. Muti...

Opening 6/27-30: Hitchcock's Blackmail, John Ewing's top three & more! https://t.e2ma.net/message/33nu0i/v9eh6t
We've shown the silent version of this 1929 Hitchcock classic but never the seminal sound version, which is 10 minutes longer and was the first British "talking picture." But we remedy that oversight Fri at 7 pm and Sat at 5 pm. 35mm print, too.
BLACKMAIL (sound version) | Cinematheque Hitchcock’s first sound feature was also Britain’s first all-talkie. One of Hitch’s best, the innovative film tells of a young woman who is blackmailed after killing an attempted ra**st. Blackmail also exists as a silent feature that’s ten minutes shorter than the sound version. 35mm. 85 min...
