Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of each foot and connects the heel bone to the toes, known as the plantar fascia.

Plantar fasciitis commonly causes stabbing pain that often occurs with your first steps in the morning.

Risk factors:
-Age. Plantar fasciitis is most common in people between the ages of 40 and 60.
-Certain types of exercise. Activities that place a lot of stress on your heel and attached tissue
-Foot mechanics. Flat feet, a high arch
-Obesity.
-Occupations that keep you on your feet.

The most common treatments for plantar fasciitis include:

-Over-the-counter NSAIDs: NSAIDs (like aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen) reduce pain and inflammation.
-Rest: Take a break from playing sports or participating in the activity that caused the plantar fasciitis.
-Icing your foot: Ice your foot for 10 to 15 minutes, twice a day.
-Wearing supportive shoes: Wear sturdy, well-cushioned shoes.
- Custom orthotics or shoe inserts: Our office can help with ordering a custom orthotic.
-Massaging and stretching.

If you continue having heel pain, schedule an appointment with North Jersey Foot and Ankle Center today!

Achilles tendinitis is an overuse injury of the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue that connects calf muscles at the back of the lower leg to your heel bone.

A number of factors may increase your risk of Achilles tendinitis, including:

-Your s*x. Achilles tendinitis occurs most commonly in men.
-Age. Achilles tendinitis is more common as you age.
-Physical problems.Obesity and tight calf muscles also can increase tendon strain.
-Training choices. Running in worn-out shoes can increase your risk of Achilles tendinitis.
-Medical conditions. People who have psoriasis or high blood pressure are at higher risk of developing Achilles tendinitis.
-Medications. Certain types of antibiotics, called fluoroquinolones, have been associated with higher rates of Achilles tendinitis.

*While it may not be possible to prevent Achilles tendinitis, you can take measures to reduce your risk:

-Increase your activity level gradually. If you're just beginning an exercise regimen, start slowly and gradually increase the duration and intensity of the training.
-Take it easy. Avoid activities that place excessive stress on your tendons, such as hill running. If you participate in a strenuous activity, warm up first by exercising at a slower pace.
-Choose your shoes carefully. The shoes you wear while exercising should provide adequate cushioning for your heel and should have a firm arch support to help reduce the tension in the Achilles.
-Stretch daily. Take the time to stretch your calf muscles and Achilles tendon in the morning, before exercise and after exercise to maintain flexibility.
-Strengthen your calf muscles. Strong calf muscles enable the calf and Achilles tendon to better handle the stresses they encounter with activity and exercise.
-Cross-train. Alternate high-impact activities, such as running and jumping, with low-impact activities, such as cycling and swimming.

Men’s Health Month is an annual observance in June dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of men’s health and encouraging men to take proactive steps to improve their overall well-being. Among the many crucial aspects of men’s health, prostate health deserves particular attention.

These lifestyle modifications promote overall health and contribute to better Men's health:
1. Regular check-ups – Schedule routine visits with your healthcare provider for comprehensive check-ups. If you’re concerned about your risk of prostate-related conditions, speak to your doctor about screenings.
2. Healthy diet and lifestyle – A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can provide essential nutrients and antioxidants that support prostate health. Regular exercise, weight management, and limiting alcohol consumption are important lifestyle factors.
3. Hydration – Staying adequately hydrated promotes overall health. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
4. Know your family history – If you smoke, take proactive steps to quit. Smoking leads to an increased risk of cancer and other health issues.
5. Quit smoking – If you smoke, take proactive steps to quit. Smoking leads to an increased risk of cancer and other health issues.
6. Stress management – Chronic stress can negatively impact overall health, including prostate health. Prioritize stress management techniques such as exercise, meditation, deep breathing, or engaging in hobbies and activities you enjoy.

1 In 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer.
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Successful treatment for skin cancer depends on early diagnosis.

Early Detection Can Save Lives
-1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.
-More than 2 people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour.
-Having 5 or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma.
-When detected early, the 5-year survival rate for melanoma is 99 percent.

An annual skin exam at a dermatologist office can determine if you’re at risk for basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma or another form of skin cancer.

-Volunteer
-Engage in random acts of kindness
-Practice mindfulness

Risk factors of gout include; high blood pressure, obesity, as well as excess intake of alcohol and certain foods(organ and red meat, and sardines.

*Why Do We Need Protein?
Proteins are made of long chains of chemical units called amino acids.
Your body uses amino acids to build and repair muscles and bones and to make hormones and enzymes. They can also be used as an energy source.

*Dangers of Low Protein Intake:
With time, too little protein may eventually contribute to;
-Sarcopenia, loss of muscle mass and strength.
-Osteopenia, loss of bone density and strength.
Loss of muscle and bone are associated with frailty and functional disability, leading to possible falls, fractures, and other injuries.
Maintenance of healthy bone structure requires adequate protein intake, and it suffers when protein availability is insufficient.
*Foods high in protein
-Lean meats; beef, lamb, veal, pork.
-poultry; chicken, turkey, duck, goose.
-fish and seafood; fish, prawns, crab, lobster, mussels, oysters,
scallops, clams.
-eggs.
-dairy products ; milk, yogurt (especially Greek yogurt), cheese
(especially cottage cheese)
-Legumes; Soybeans, Lentils,
Large White Beans, Split Peas, Pinto Beans, Kidney Beans, Black Beans.

National Feet Week takes place every year and asks everyone to prioritize their foot health.

Many people ignore common foot complaints or indeed serious pain rather than go to see an expert. Podiatrists are there to help with all manner of foot conditions and can usually help resolve minor issues quickly. Problems with the feet can be an indication of other health issues and so it’s so important to take care of our feet as we would our teeth and eyes.
Make National Feet Week a time to have your feet checked or to get that niggling issue sorted and make your feet your priority – after all they take you anywhere you want to go.
