Myopia Awareness Week
Day 4: Treatment Options
👁️ Atropine Therapy: Atropine eye drops for myopia control are used once per day, at night time. Atropine 0.02% and 0.025% have been shown to slow myopia progression by about one-third, and atropine 0.05% by about one-half, compared to children on placebo treatment.
It's important to note that children on atropine treatment for myopia control will still need spectacles or contact lenses to see clearly. Atropine does not correct blurred vision from myopia, it only works to slow myopia progression.
👁️ Orthokeratology: (aka ortho-k) the use of specially designed and fitted hard contact lenses to temporarily reshape the cornea to improve vision and slow axial elongation associated with worsening myopia. It's like orthodontics for your eyes and the treatment is often compared to dental braces.
👁️ MiSight Soft Contact Lenses: The FIRST and ONLY FDA-approved* soft contact lens proven to slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children, aged 8-12 at the initiation of treatment.
The ideal myopia control treatment for your child will depend on a number of factors, including their eye measurements, capabilities, activities and more.
☎️ Schedule today to see what options would be best for your child!
Myopia Awareness Week
Day 3: Complications of High Myopia (Nearsightedness)
😔 Retinal Detachment: An emergency when part of the eye (the retina) pulls away from supportive tissue. The vast majority of retinal detachments progress to irreversible vision loss if left untreated.
😔 Myopic Maculopathy: Myopic maculopathy is a severe form of myopia, or nearsightedness, that gets worse over time. It can lead to legal blindness and severe complications, such as retinal detachment and choroidal neovascularization.
😔 Glaucoma: The link between myopia and glaucoma has been explored for nearly a century. A number of studies, including the Blue Mountains Eye Study and the Beijing Eye Study, have found that the risk of glaucoma appears to increase in persons with high myopia (6 D or more).
😔 Cataracts: According to the Beaver Dam Eye Study and the Blue Mountains Eye Study, there is an association between myopia and nuclear cataract. The Blue Mountains Eye Study also found that moderate and high myopia, especially with onset prior to age 20, are associated with posterior subcapsular cataract formation.
Let’s slow myopia progression!
Schedule your appointment today to discuss treatment options.
Myopia Awareness Week
Day 2: Causes
👁️ Genetics
Myopia in children increases when parents have myopia. The likelihood of your child having myopia is…
• 1 in 2 when BOTH parents have myopia.
• 1 in 3 when ONE parent has myopia.
• 1 in 4 when NEITHER parent has myopia.
👁️ Lifestyle
Research shows that modern lifestyles may influence the development of myopia such as….
• insufficient time spent outdoors.
• prolonged time spent reading and playing or working with digital devices, like smartphones or tablets.
• poor lighting levels.
Our newest member of our Myopia Control Program with MiSight 1-day contacts! 😎 Welcome to PEC’s MiSight family, Everett!
Do you know your child's vision prescription? As myopia progresses, your child may experience increasingly blurry vision and be at a greater risk for other eye health conditions. Schedule an appointment with one of our certified MiSight providers to learn more about options to slow myopia progression and ask about MiSight 1-day soft contact lenses.
Myopia Awareness Week 2023
Day 1: Does your child squint, complain of being unable to read the board at school, get closer to objects to see them better?
If so, call today to schedule a visit with one of our eye care providers! Your child may have an eye condition called Myopia (aka nearsightedness) that results in poor or blurred vision when viewing in the distance. It is also known as nearsightedness because people with myopia without correction can still see things clearly that are close.
Stay tuned for causes, risk factors and available treatments!
Ask a PEC provider today how we can minimize the amount of myopia for your child!
WE ARE HIRING! Apply to join the team today!
