An engine operations class focused on the foundational skill set of flowing and moving a handline.
Two great days of engine ops in Monterey, Ca. Thanks to Cal Fire BEU, Monterey Fire, and Monterey County Fire Training Officers Association for hiring us! To the participants, we had an absolute blast. Thank you for the trust!
Registration is now live! Use the QR code on the flyer to secure your spot in the class. Proud to bring 2 days of our class to Monterey next month! Looking forward to a couple great days of engine ops 👊🏻
Note: This will likely be our last set of classes until Fall/Winter as we do not teach during fire season due to staffing issues.
Advanced skills are useless if you don’t know the basics. These basic, foundational skills are skills that we will carry with us our whole career. When paired with experience, they create competent, proficient, and effective firemen. A lack of ability to perform the basics is something that cannot be covered up on the fireground.
We are professionals and our training should reflect that. Think about a professional baseball position player and their batting practice sessions. How do they begin each session? A batting tee, the most basic tool when it comes to hitting. A tool that 5 year olds use for entry level baseball. As basic as it is, the value cannot be overlooked. We need to have this same approach when it comes to what we take pride in.
Nothing in our class is advanced, nor do we claim it to be. It is focused on the foundational skills of engine work and solid firemanship. Focus on the basics, they’ll get you far.

The Back-Up
The nozzleman sets the tone for the advance, but the back-up is the unsung hero of the operation. Their actions have a direct effect on our ability to get to the seat of the fire and whether or not the nozzleman can maneuver the line/deliver an effective stream.
The SFM mission is to build upon the foundational skill set of flowing/advancing a hose line and increase the students efficiency of movement. Nothing about this class is advanced and that is by design. It is also not filled with considerations or “tools for the toolbox”. The fire service is over saturated with considerations and creates firefighters who are more concentrated on the things they need to consider on a fire, rather than breaking the job down to its simplest form, getting water on the fire. Stretching, flowing, and moving, focuses on just that. Our cadre’s goal is to build upon your existing skill set and provide you with techniques that you can use on your very next fire.
