Lāhainā, once the first capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, is a place dear to our hearts and history.

Today we remember the devastating Lāhainā wildfire that deeply impacted our Maui ʻohana and all of Hawaiʻi. The wounds of that day are deep, but our unity and determination endure. We honor the lives lost and the incredible strength of our community.

Let us continue to stand together and support those in need. Through donations, volunteering, and spreading awareness, every act of aloha makes a difference. Together, we will heal, rebuild, and emerge stronger.

In his distinctive style, Rocky carved images that looked like us, with wide, flat noses and thick thighs and calves. Carved of milo in 1978, three images rise vertically. The bottom kiʻi appears burdened, its pearl eyes cast downward, its mouth a grimace, pained perhaps by the weight it bears. Upon its shoulders and hands stands the second image, its mouth puckered into a small circle, its face turned slightly upwards in a hopeful gaze. In its raised hands, it holds a large seed – our collective future.

The islands of Hawaiʻi are some of the most isolated land masses in the world. Birthed from the easterly journey of a "hotspot" beneath the Pacific Ocean floor, these islands emerged from the dark depths and took its first breath of life millions of years ago. The oldest of the major islands, Kauaʻi & Niʻihau, have an estimated age of 4-5 million years. Hawaiʻi Island, the youngest island and namesake of the archipelago, is an estimated 300,000-400,000 years old. Though rich in fresh water and vegetation, it was obvious to the first inhabitants of Hawaiʻi that the resources of the ʻāina were finite and required careful oversight. By the time of Kamehameha, a strict religiopolitical system of land and resource management had emerged, based on the ancestral relationship of the people, their leaders, and the ʻāina. Join Ranger Renson at 1pm this Saturday (5/11) and Sunday (5/12) as we "talk story" about Kapu - the system from which this word emerged, what it meant to Kamehameha, the political transition in Hawaiʻi resulting from breaking the ʻAikapu, to its modern application today. Ranger Talks are hosted at the Puʻukoholā Heiau NHS Visitor Center and are free to the public.
