The "High Bridge" is a National Landmark in The City of Coatesville. 1,000' long, 100' tall and 120 years old. It took 1 year to build.
• The Pennsylvania Railroad built this bridge for steam locomotive trains to cross the Brandywine River Gorge in 1904
• The Railroad hired "A corps of specially imported Italian masons" to build the bridge.
• No modern excavation equpment or cranes were used by these men.
• They built the High Bridge with the same methods and tools used by the Roman Empire- to construct viaducts and aqueducts that still stand, over 2,000 years after they were built.
• The Pennsylvania Railroads went back to these ancient construction techniques so the bridge would withstand the stress of locomotive engines carrying freight and passenger cars for centuries.
• The stone High Bridge has already surpassed its two predecessors by almost a century.
• Driving through the arches of the High Bridge on PA Route 82, or strolling under it in the Brandywine RiverWalk in Downtown Coatesville is a memorable experience. Especially when the train is crossing the bridge, high above the Brandywine Creek blowing its horn. It must have been a wonder when steam engines made their way across the valley!.
• Photos on this post show Excavation to bedrock in November of 1902 & masonry construction completed in January of 1904.
• On a personal note, my Great-Grandfather, Pietro Ancone, was one of the Italians imported by the Pennsylvania Railroad...
• The "High Bridge" became a National Registered Historic Landmark in 1976.
• Here is an excerpt from the application to the U.S. Department of the Interior:
"The Penn Central Railroad Bridge at Coatesville is a ten-arch bridge spanning the west branch of the Brandywine Creek.
Each arch is ninety-six feet high, and has stone voussoirs over its entire length. Regularly coursed rusticated stone-work fills the spaces between arches; the bridge has nine
piers. The bridge carries four tracks*.
The bridge, built in 1903, was part of a comprehensive bridge rebuilding program begun by the Pennsylvania Railroad around 1887, under the general direction of chief engineer, William A. Brown. A corps of specially imported Italian masons was employed as labor on the project. The first work for the construction was begun in November, 1902, when excavating
Ä‘one by Dunleavy Brothers,.West Chester, was begun along the road leading to Rock Run, at the east end of the proposed structure. Excavation was pursued to a point where solid rock was reached. Construction of the arches, under the direction of Goil and Company, Lancaster, was begun about a month later.
Negatives in the files of the Lukens Steel Corporation, Coatesville, give a documented study of the monthly progress of the work.
Ten examples of the 1903 pictures are included in this nomination"

GOOD NEWS! The PA LCB approved the License for Steel City Brewing. Opening info is here, so read on...

Next week, it will be one year since we announced our plans to renovate 10,000 sq ft of a 130 year-old building as a restaurant and brewery in the heart of Downtown Coatesville.

That announcement was only made possible because Kate & Philip Ferro, local residents and owners of Kings Tavern & Chadds Ford Tavern, agreed to add this project to their succesful restaurant portfolio. Their commitment to the City is a testament to their optimism for Coatesville's future. Their expertise, enthusiasm and passion for creating and operating successful restaurants is legendary. If you need proof, I invite you to go to King's Tavern for a taste of the exceptional dining experience they provide. You'll find Happy Hour, Lunch & Daily Specials with menu items priced for every budget. Open Daily, Noon to 10PM with Happy Hour 4-6 Every Day. The kitchen pleases, and the hospitality and service are impeccable. The atmosphere is superb.

Mark Milanese, resident of The City of Coatesville and co-owner of Milanese Remodeling searched many years before meeting Philip, The Million Dollar Chef, who shared his vision for this property. Mark financed this project with loans funded by Presence Bank, secured by Mark's equity in the building, and supplemented with his personal savings.

Steel City Brewing is grateful to Coatesville 2nd Century Alliance for awarding us a $7,500 Facade Grant. That extra money is very much appreciated and will help toward making the Main Street storefront much nicer!

City Government, including the Building Codes Department, as well as County, State and Federal Governnent departments, boards and commitees have all been supportive and helpful, while enforcing rules and regulations that are mandated.

The Utility companies - especially Pennsylvania American Water and PECO have just been great!

The many people who have been involved in this project are so into this building They love being part of history and bringing this place back to life. They are truly artists and are using all their skills to make this building great đź‘Ť đź‘Ś They are doing the heavy lifting for Coatesville Downtown Revitalization

Nobody has been more supportive of this project than YOU!!!

If you're reading this, you are my best friend. You've cheered us on. You've told me how excited you are. You've asked us to make your favorite beer. You want us to save you a seat for the Grand Opening. Musicians want to entertain tge guests at Steel City. Organizations want to have meetings. High School Alumni want to have Reunions.

All I can say is, THANK YOU...

Now that the Brewing License has veen granted, we'll be able to continue fit-out for the Beer Hall. The interior is largely finished. We're waiting for the water meter vault. As soon as that arrives we'll Excavate and install new water, sewer, electric, gas and communication lines. Then we can put the finishing touches on the interior, get our Use & Occupancy permits and start Brewing Beer.

Steel City Brewing will Open This Summer.

We'll have a month under our belts for the 2024 Coatesville Invitational Vintage Grand Prix in September. We expect that sports and music fans will enloy the atmosphere. Foodies will find everything you want to eat at a brewery (and nothing you don't!). Craft beer lovers will what we're Brewing. This brewery will be very special and,we're working hard to make sure you like it!

We are looking forward to serving up Great Food, Craft Beer and Fun Times, to you, in our hometown!

Thanks again!

Stay tuned for more... And please like, follow, share and spread the word!

John Moore, a Painter's Life 02/07/2024

John Moore, the finest realist painter of this generation made The City of Coatesville into beautuful paintings. Very famous paintings, as it turns out...
Watch this video from about 7 and a half minutes to see what inspired him here, and some of the work he created... He followed the footsteps of Demuth, Grutzka and others to the Steel Mills, bridges, creek and hillsides of the Steel City.

John Moore, a Painter's Life John Moore is one of the world's greatest artists. He is one of the "New Realists" who emerged in the 1960's, artists who wanted to bring back representation...

Toby Keith’ will be remembered for Party songs like "Red Solo Cup" & "I Love This Bar"... C&W songs like "Beer for my Horses" & "Should've Been a Cowboy... Patriot songs like "Made in America" & "American Soldier". But, "Don't Let the Old Man In" is a ballad, and here's what inspired it...

Toby asked Clint Eastwood what he was doing to celebrate his 88th birthday, and he told him he was going to start shooting a new movie called The Mule. Toby asked him how he keeps going. And Clint said, "I get up every morning and choose not to let the old man in"...
Keith wrote this song and it's featured in that movie.
I've been trying to live by that idea since I heard that story... I get up every morning and I choose not to let the old man in.

Amelia Earhart's Stop In Coatesville 01/31/2024

Before she was lost, Amelia Earhart found The City of Coatesville! She had dinner at the Coach and Four and visited the firefighters at the Washington Hose Fire Company in Coatesville in 1934.
She was called "Lady Lindy" for being the 1st woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She added to her world fame by also flying solo across North America and from Hawaii to California.
Maybe she would've stopped at The Hungry Pilot at the Chester County G. O. Carlson Airport, if it was open 90 years ago!
Read more about her visit to Downtown Coatesville in this article from Main Line Today!

Amelia Earhart's Stop In Coatesville In 1934, aviator Amelia Earhart stopped for a meal—and had some foolishness for dessert.
