We learned a lot during the COVID pandemic. One of the more surprising lessons was just how critical human contact and socializing are for us. Obviously, it’s important for our mental health and resilience. But we learned about several health benefits that relationships bring us. The surprise was just how much of an impact socializing has on:
Life expectancy
Heart health
Depression
Blood Pressure
Anxiety
Stress
Chronic Pain
Gut health
Sleep quality
Inflammation

OK, fellow introverts, this is all true even for us. It’s all about balance. Of course, we need our downtime to recoup our energy. But you have to make time to cultivate relationships. Do it for you!

When you think of the benefits of fiber, what comes to mind?
Eating fiber helps keep us regular. And that’s a good thing to be sure. Pooping is how we pass the toxins in our bodies. But wait…There’s more!
Fiber has a range of possible health benefits, such as:
⭐️ promoting weight loss
⭐️ lowering blood sugar
⭐️ boosting heart health
⭐️ feeding friendly gut bacteria
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends consuming about 14 grams (g) of fiber for every 1,000 calories you consume daily.
Here’s a list or foods which are high in fiber (how often do you eat one or more of these daily?):

This image is great - Wholefood swaps for several medicines! Modern medicine certainly has it's place, but you might be surprised how powerful the healing power of food can be.
Some of the produce found in J+ is circled!

I typically always include bananas in my smoothies (also have a delicious shake recipe that includes ginger 😋) and eat a variety of nuts as an easy on the go snack options.

Flooding your body with WHOLEFOODS, bridging the gaps in your nutrition with the J+ and getting outside for a walk for good old fashioned vitamin D, can work wonders on your body and hopefully keep health problems at bay.

How have you been sleeping? Getting a good night’s sleep is incredibly important for your health. Here are a few tips:

Avoid alcohol. You might think it relaxes you, but it's been shown to disrupt sleep.

No bedtime snacks. It takes energy to digest your food. Don't ask your body to do that while you are trying to get to sleep.

Get moving. As a trainer, I regularly hear that better sleep is a common benefit of introducing regular exercise.

Good nutrition. Better sleep was one of the first things that I noticed when I started eating J+!

Eating enough plants can be difficult this time of year. Here are some ideas:

Add greens wherever you can.

Upgrade your oatmeal with some frozen berries, bananas, or cut up apples.

Sneak plants into smoothies.

Build a brighter sandwich.

Snack time don't reach for processed food, grab an orange, some graps, bell pepper and hummus...

Swap pasta for veggie noodles.

Dress up your eggs with some microgreens, fresh herbs, tomatoes.

SHEET PAN VEGGIES

Ingredients👇
2 cups sliced carrots (length wise)
2 cups thinly sliced radishes
2 cups halved brussel sprouts
3 tbsps oil of choice (I used avocado)
1 1/2 tbsp rosemary chopped
1 1/2 tbsp crushed garlic
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup chopped dried cranberries
Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 F and line a sheet pan with parchment paper
Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly
Spread veggie mix on sheet pan and bake for 30-35 mins. Ovens may vary!

It can be really hard this time of year to get all of the phytonutrients that your body needs. Remember to eat a rainbow every day. You really need ALL of these to feel your best.

A child who just doesn't like vegetables.
A spouse who will only eat meat and starch.
A loved one going through chemo.
A friend fighting off an illness with no appetite.
A person with sensory processing disorder who can't tolerate certain textures without gagging.
Someone with severe GERD who now associates food with pain.
There are lots of reasons for "picky eating". When I was in the middle of this struggle with my child, it felt hopeless, all consuming, and utterly overwhelming. Dr. Miles has a lot of experience with this and I know she will have some great, practical advice. And she won't say "when he's hungry enough he'll eat!" 🥴
